Season Preview: Salisbury Cross Country

SALISBURY, Md. – The Salisbury University men’s and women’s cross country teams look to make great strides forward in 2017 and build off a successful 2016 campaign. Here is what Head Coach Jim Jones had to say about each team and the upcoming 2017 season. Women’s Cross Country Team 1. What are your goals and expectations for the 2017 season? Challenge for the conference championship and improve on our finish at the NCAA Regional Championship. 2. How do you build on your success from 2016? We have a strong group of returners and recruited a very good class of new comers that I believe will contribute to the team this year. I feel the women have been preparing themselves well over the summer and if they continue to do so throughout the fall I feel we can reach our goals. 3. Who are you looking at to lead the team this season? Alison Schwartz is a senior and earned All-CAC honors last year. She is coming off a strong track & field season were she set three school records in the 3000 (I), 10K & 5K (O). Abby Potter is a sophomore and earned All-CAC honors last year as well. Working with Alison with be junior Fiona Halloran and sophomore Christine Strum. Both had an outstanding spring and will help lead us. We have a strong group of sophomores that I feel have grown during their first season, Ashley Mazer, Shea McCloskey who ran 2:18 in the 800 this spring during the track & field season, Jillian Swaim, and junior Carly Sniffen who had a huge breakthrough race in the 1500 meters at the CAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships this past spring. Men’s Cross Country Team 1. What are your goals and expectations for the 2017 season? Challenge for the conference championship and improve on our finish at the NCAA Regional Championship. 2. How do you build on your success from 2016? We have a strong group of returners and recruited a very good class of new comers that I believe will contribute to the team this year. Who are you looking at to lead the team this season? Malcolm Milton is a senior and earned All-NCAA Regionals last year. Branson Oduor is a sophomore and earned Freshman All-NCAA Regionals last year. Others that will help lead the team will be two juniors - Connor Masteran and Emmanuel Porquin. We have a strong sophomore that I feel have grown during their first season, Greg Bisant, Parker Harrington, Andrew Robey, and Michael Weber. Both Teams 4. Expectation for your freshmen class? To adjust academically and athletically to Salisbury University. I don’t put a lot of pressure on them because all the changes the will go through in their first year. I just want them to learn and grow. They will have to adjust to the higher standards and expectations that they will experience in and out of the classroom. If they are able to do that ask for support from professors, their teammates and myself when needed I believe they will be successful hear at SU! 5. How do you think your schedule helps you and your team? We are running a competitive schedule again this year. We will be hosting two home meet on September 2nd and September 30th. We will be going to the UMass Dartmouth in mid-September and the Inter-Regional Border Battle held at Rowan University. Both meets will challenge us and give us an opportunity to compete against some of the top teams in the nation. a. Is there one meet in particular you see being more important? Is the Capital Athletic Conference Championships and NCAA Regionals. I believe we have two very good teams this year and feel if we put in the work, stay healthy…we will accomplish our goals. 6. Salisbury Cross Country will be successful in 2017 because ____________? We have very good leadership this year and the team has a focus that I have seen in other teams that were championships teams….I haven’t been this excited for a season in several year. Mostly because of the great leadership and team that we have assembled for the 2017 season!
