Freshmen tally first-place finishes; Gulls fall to Rowan in opener

GLASSBORO, N.J. – The Salisbury University men's and women's swimming teams opened their 2013-14 schedule on Tuesday at Rowan University, as the men fell, 147-104, and the women lost, 137-112.

Men

In his first meet of his collegiate career, freshman Okan Eyigor finished first in two events; the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 53.49 and the 200-yard backstroke finishing in 1:57.34. In the 200-yard backstroke, Eyigor was followed by sophomore Sean DiFatta and senior Darryl Baxter for second and third, respectively.

The freshmen continued to make their mark, as Travis Maida and John Williams tallied first- and second-place finishes in the 200-yard IM with times of 2:14.38 and 2:20.34, respectively. Following in third place was senior Mike Bengtson, with a time of 2:22.17.

Senior James Gough earned four points in the 500-yard freestyle, finishing second with a time of 5:15.84. Following close behind were juniors Eric Gillies and Philip Kuldell, finishing with times of 5:39.45 and 5:45.44 to take the third and fourth spots.

Women

Freshman Victoria Radcliffe notched her first collegiate victory, taking the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 2:00.10. She held a two-second lead over the second-place finisher for Rowan, scoring nine points for the Gulls.

Sophomore Nicki Schult added nine more points to the score with a first-place finish in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:23.59.

In the 50-yard freestyle, freshman Stephanie Wilson, junior Kristina Watts and sophomore Melissa Alessandrini all finished with a time of 28.65 to take second, third, and fourth place, in that order.

The 400-yard freestyle relay team composed of Alessandrini and freshmen Maggie Deering, Layne Gable and Radcliffe, finished just under 11 seconds behind Rowan to claim second place with a time of 4:03.46.

The Sea Gulls head home for their next meet as they kick off the Capital Athletic Conference schedule against Frostburg State University at Maggs Physical Activity Center on Saturday, October 26. The meet is set to begin at 1 p.m.
