Swimming grabs first victory; defeats Bobcats

SALISBURY, Md. – The Salisbury University men's and women's swimming teams recorded their first victories of the season Saturday afternoon against conference foe Frostburg State University, as the men won 159-82 while the women finished with a score of 135-113.

Both programs totaled 23 first-place finishes out of the 28 events, winning the first nine right out the gates.

Men

Nine Sea Gulls tallied first-place finishes today at the meet with seniors Chris Franklin and James Gough and freshman Okan Eyigor earning three a piece.

The first event for the men set the pace for an excellent day. The 200-meter medley relay showed no concerns for the men, as all three Salisbury groups finished in the top-three. Eyigor got his team of Franklin, freshman Travis Maida, and sophomore Jake Blazer out ot a two-body length lead after just 50 meters and the team cruised to the victory with a time of 1:54.98.

Gough concluded the meet with three different victories. In the 50-meter backstroke, he scored nine points on his 30.53 finish. In the later half of the competition, he swam the 100-meter backstroke, finishing with a time of 1:05.22 to take first place. In the final race of the day, Gough, alongside of Eyigor, Franklin and freshman Scott Schirmer, tallied the victory in the 200-meter freestyle relay with a time of 1:41.50.

Others to claim first-place finishes today were junior Rich Ambrose in the 50-meter freestyle (25.54), and sophomores Colin Ault in the 50-meter butterfly (30.05) and Sean DiFatta in the 400-meter breaststroke (1:16.29) and the 800-meter freestyle (9:48.96).

Women

The women recorded their first conference victory Saturday, as seven different swimmers tallied first-place finishes. Leading the squad were sophomore Andria Moyer and freshman Victoria Radcliffe, both recording four victories.

Starting the day off for Salisbury, the foursome of Radcliffe, Moyer, and freshmen Maggie Deering and Layne Gable claimed first place in the 200-meter medley relay with a time of 2:15.38, recording 11 points. Deering finished the day with three top finishes, while Gable recorded two.

Radcliffe and Moyer went on to compete together in the women's final race of the day with sophomore Nicki Schult and junior Melissa Alessandrini in the 200-meter freestyle relay, finishing with a time of 2:01.18 to score first-place honors. Schult concluded the day with three top finishes.

Radcliffe also claimed victories in the 50-meter breaststroke and the 200-meter IM, with times of 37.31 and 2:30.89, respectively, while Moyer finished first in the 100-meter freestyle and the 50-meter butterfly with times of 1:06.45 and 32.84, in that order.

Freshman Rachel Lisk finished with a time of 36.38 in the 50-meter backstroke to record her first collegiate victory and scoring nine points for the Gulls.

The squad is back in action next Saturday, Nov. 2, against Catholic University of America at Maggs Physical Activity Center. The meet is set to begin at 1 p.m.
