NEWPOERT NEWS, Va. – For the first time since March 2020, the Salisbury University men's and women's track and field teams competed indoors. The Sea Gulls opened the 2021-22 indoor season at the CNU Holiday Open at the Vince Brown Track; team scores were not tracked.
RESULTS
HOW IT HAPPENED
Men
- Travis Zimmerman picked up where he left off during the 2021 outdoor season by winning both the shot put (13.39m, 43-11.25) and weight throw (16.49m, 54-1.25). His weight throw distance is currently the 10th-best mark in NCAA Division III. Zimmerman won Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference (C2C) titles in the outdoor shot put and hammer throw last spring.
- The Sea Gulls won the 4x400-meter relay behind the four-man team of Isaiah Myers, Nazaire Spencer, Mike Heinz and Ryan Temple in 3:33.22. Heinz was a late-addition substitute in the third leg of the race.
- Sherrod Frye finished second in the triple jump at 13.78 meters (45-2.5), ranking him 10th nationally in the event.
- Jacob Shelton and Rashawn Markman each qualified for the finals in the 60-meter dash, with Shelton taking third in the deciding race in a time of 7.08 seconds.
- Spencer (52.75) and Myers (52.81) finished second and third, respectively, in the 400-meter dash.
- Temple and Heinz each finished top-three in the 800-meter run. Temple took second in 2:03.29, while Heinz finished right behind him in third in 2:03.35.
- Austin Foote earned a third-place finish in the mile run, crossing the finish line in 4:36.71.
- Sam Bodmer and Ethan Gray finished top-two in the SU-dominated 3,000-meter run. Bodmer won the race in 9:31.89, while Gray took second in 9:33.64.
- Andrew McGinley tied for first in the high jump by clearing 1.88 meters (6-2), while Dylan Haun took third place with a height of 1.83 meters (6-0). Markman earned a third-place finish in the long jump at 6.53 meters (21-5.25).
- Luis Smith turned in solid performances behind Zimmerman in both the shot put (13.36m, 43-10) and weight throw (14.28m, 46-10.25), taking third place in both events.
Women
- Heather Delaplaine broke the tape in the mile run with a time of 5:30.28. Salisbury dominated the event, with Erin Connelly (5:55.20), Maddie Rathmann (5:57.74) and Kate Yokay (6:00.55) finishing second, third and fourth, respectively.
- Erin Gebhardt crossed third in the 400-meter dash in a time of 1:08.37.
- Destinee Ekanem earned a bronze in the 800-meter run in 2:31.22.
- Danielle Jensen cleared 10.18 meters (33-4.75) in the triple jump, finishing third.
UP NEXT
- The Sea Gulls will be off for a month and a half and return to action at the two-day Eastern Shore Invitational, hosted by the University of Maryland Eastern Shore, on January 28-29, 2022.
- Events on both days at the Hytche Athletic Center in Princess Anne will begin at 9 a.m.
