TOKYO – Former Salisbury University track & field star Luke Campbell '16 finished 11th overall in the semifinals of the men's 400-meter hurdles on Day 9 of the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.
Campbell, who competes for Team Germany, finished fifth in the second semifinal heat with a personal-best time of 48.62 seconds, destroying his previous personal record of 49.19 seconds set in the preliminary rounds of the 400-meter hurdles. The top two times in each of the three heats automatically advanced to the finals and the fastest two times outside of the automatic qualifiers advanced to the medal race.
"Luke's performance this week shows everyone that he is legitimately one of the top-level hurdlers in the world," stated SU head track & field and cross country coach Jim Jones. "He couldn't have done any better by putting himself in position to qualify for the finals than finishing the race with a big personal record. We all are extremely pleased with how he competed in the semifinals and at the Olympics!"
