2022 C2C Volleyball Tournament Preview

The Rundown

Looking to build on last season's run to the championship match, the fourth-seeded Salisbury University volleyball team is primed to pursue its ninth conference title at the 2022 Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference (C2C) Tournament in Fredericksburg, Va. The Sea Gulls begin their chase against the fifth-seeded Mount Mary Blue Angels on Friday at 11 a.m. at Ron Rosner Arena on the campus of the University of Mary Washington.

Salisbury opened the regular season on a 13-1 clip and won four of its final five contests on the way to finishing 18-7.
The Sea Gulls faced C2C opponents five times, going 1-4 with a 3-1 victory over Christopher Newport on Oct. 13.
In the most recent NCAA Regional Rankings on Oct. 30, SU was slotted in seventh in Region V.
Salisbury played 12 matches this season against teams that currently boast regional rankings, going 5-7 with wins against Arcadia, Christopher Newport, DeSales, Rowan and Virginia Wesleyan.

Mount Mary went 8-21 and closed out the regular season on a nine-match losing streak.
The Blue Angels won their only two games against C2C foes in 2022, sweeping Finlandia on Sept. 9 and Oct. 8.
MMU is led up front by junior outside hitter Brianna Ecker, who ranks third in the C2C in kills (316) and fifth in kills per set (3.10) on the way to Second-Team All-C2C recognition. In the back, sophomore defensive specialist Ahlyna Cason slots in fifth in the league in digs (352) and eighth in digs per set (3.59).

This is the first-ever meeting between the Sea Gulls and Blue Angels, who are based out of Milwaukee, Wisc.

The winner of the SU-MMU matchup will advance to face top-seeded UC Santa Cruz in the semifinals on Friday at 4 p.m., with the semifinal winners meeting in the C2C Championship Match on Saturday at 4 p.m.
The loser of the SU-MMU matchup will play in the Fifth Place Match on Saturday at 11 a.m., while the two semifinal losers will play in the Third Place Match at 1:30 p.m.
Salisbury is seeking its ninth conference championship and first since 2012, as well as its first NCAA Tournament berth since 2013. The Sea Gulls advanced to the C2C Championship in 2021, falling in five sets to Christopher Newport.

#2 Amanda Chew - First-Team All-C2C

#7 Grace Rail - C2C Defensive Player of the Year, First-Team All-C2C

#20 Jenna Feinauer - Second-Team All-C2C

First-Team All-C2C defensive specialist Grace Rail was named C2C Defensive Player of the Year, marking the third straight season that a Sea Gull has been named the league's top defender. Darian DiMatteo won Defensive Player of the Year in 2021, while Hailey Doughtery took top defensive honors in 2019.
Joining Rail on the All-C2C First Team is outside hitter Amanda Chew, who becomes a two-time First-Teamer after making the league's top squad in 2019.
Middle blocker Jenna Feinauer followed up a First-Team All-C2C campaign in 2021 with Second-Team All-C2C accolades in 2022.
Chew leads the C2C in kills (356) and kills per set (3.83). She also ranks second in points (389.0), sixth in digs (339) and digs per set (3.65) and 11th in hitting percentage (.233).
Rail enters tournament play as the C2C leader in digs (494) and digs per set (5.43).
Feinauer's 1.05 blocks per set are tops in the conference. She also ranks third in total blocks (79) and seventh in swing percentage (.286).
Salisbury boasts national top-100 rankings in the following eight statistical categories:

Feinauer ranks 25th nationally in blocks per set (1.05) and 170th in hitting percentage (.286).
Chew boasts national rankings in six categories, including kills per set (3.83, 34th), attacks per set (11.00, 34th), total kills (356, 41st), total attacks (1,023, 41st), points (389.0, 60th) and points per set (4.18, 63rd).
Rail slots in nationally in both digs per set (5.43, 28th) and total digs (494, 44th).
