NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Three Sea Gulls won their events and both the Salisbury University men's and women's track and field teams finished in second place after Day 1 of the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference (C2C) Indoor Championships on Friday afternoon at the Vince Brown Track.
The Sea Gull women earned 48 points after the first day's events, 11 ahead of third-place Mary Washington (37) and behind only hosts Christopher Newport (73). The Sea Gull men notched 37 points, well ahead of third-place Mary Washington (11) and trailing only CNU (57).
RESULTS
HOW IT HAPPENED
Men
- Rashawn Markman captured the gold in the long jump, soaring 6.75 meters (22-1.75) to beat out his closest competitor by a tenth of a meter. Sherrod Frye also finished on the podium in the event, taking third place at 6.32 meters (20-9).
- Travis Zimmerman earned third career C2C title by winning the weight throw at 17.27 meters (56-8). Zimmerman adds this first indoor gold to his resume after winning the outdoor shot put and hammer throw in 2021.
- Jacob Shelton qualified for Saturday's finals in the 60-meter dash, winning the second heat and finishing second overall at 7.13 seconds.
- The distance medley relay team of Ryan Temple, Isaiah Myers, Mike Heinz and Christian Ciattei earned a bronze with a time of 10:50.25, finishing just 1.2 seconds out of second place.
Women
- Sydney Ruckel added a fourth conference championship to her collection in dramatic fashion, sprinting ahead of CNU's Maddy Rawlings on the final lap to win the 5,000-meter run in 18:58.73. The senior distance specialist previously earned gold in the 3,000-meter run at the 2020 Capital Athletic Conference (CAC, now C2C) Indoor Championships, plus 2019 CAC outdoor titles in the 5,000-meter and 10,000-meter runs. Ruckel will seek to repeat as the league's 3,000-meter champion on Saturday.
- Colleen Howard took a silver in the high jump, clearing 1.57 meters (5-1.75) and finishing behind only nemesis Abby McPhillips of UC Santa Cruz. McPhillips bested Howard in the high jump on a tiebreaker at the 2021 C2C Outdoor Championships.
- Sophia Crozier-Carole finished third in the pole vault at 2.99 meters (9-9.75).
- Makayla Davis captured the bronze in the weight throw at 13.10 meters (42-11.75), while Alexandra Jakubowski finished right behind her in fourth at 12.82 meters (42-0.75).
- Danielle Jensen earned a spot in the 60-meter hurdle finals on Saturday, placing second in her heat and fourth overall with a qualifying time of 9.85 seconds. Jensen also finished just off the podium in the long jump, taking fourth with a distance of 4.77 meters (15-7.75).
- The distance medley relay team finished third, with Maddie Rathmann, Erin Connelly, Abby Simmons and Heather Delaplaine combining for a time of 13:30.24.

- The Sea Gulls will finish up their stay in Newport News with Day 2 of the C2C Indoor Championships on Saturday.
