Women win, Men take second at Lloyd Sigler Spring Meet

SALISBURY, Md. – The Salisbury University men's and women's track and field teams opened the outdoor season in style, each earning top-two finishes at the Lloyd Sigler Spring Meet on Saturday afternoon at the SU Track & Field Complex.

The women's team won the meet by totaling 137 points, besting second-place Goldey-Beacom (127) by nine. Rowan College South Jersey Gloucester (59), Chestnut Hill (46) and Gallaudet (43) rounded out the top five.

The Sea Gull men took a close second-place finish with 151 points, just a point and a half back of the winning team from Wilmington (152.5). Gallaudet (94), Goldey-Beacom (75.5) and Marymount (Va.) took third, fourth and fifth, respectively.

RESULTS

HOW IT HAPPENED

Women

  • Colleen Howard won the high jump, clearing 1.62 meters (5-3.75). Howard won the women's high jump five times during the 2021 outdoor season.
  • Allyson Wagner bested the field in the 5,000-meter run, winning in 19:46.78, nearly a full minute faster than her next-closest competitor.
  • Abby Simmons led the pack in the 800-meter run, winning the race in 2:36.49.
  • Maddie Rathmann won the 1,500-meter run in a time of 5:28.23.
  • Courtney Martin broke the tape in the 400-meter hurdles, crossing the line in 1:14.74.
  • Sophia Crozier-Carole took the victory in the pole vault at 2.95 meters (9-8).
  • Alexandra Jakubowski (32.59m, 106-11) and Makayla Davis (29.82m, 97-10) finished two-three, respectively, in the hammer throw.
  • Lian Peach took second in the triple jump at 9.89 meters (32-5.5).
  • Salisbury took the second, third and fourth slots in the 100-meter hurdles, with Martin (17.15 seconds) leading the way and Peach (17.79) and Grace Dear (19.48) following close behind.

Men

  • Luis Smith earned a victory in the shout put, clocking in at 13.61 meters (44-8) for one of his three podium finishes on the day.
  • Smith (34.72m, 113-11) and Garrett Blasi (personal-best 30.26m, 99-3) earned the silver and bronze, respectively, in the hammer throw. Smith also finished third in the discus at 35.91 meters (117-10).
  • Cameron Hasko opened the season with a convincing win in the javelin. The reigning Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference (C2C) champion managed a personal-best distance of 58.06 meters (190-6), five-and-a-half meters better than the rest of the field.
  • Christian Ciattei won the 1,500-meter run in 4:15.31 and grabbed third place in the 800-meter run at 2:04.07.
  • Ethan Gray claimed victory in the 3,000-meter steeplechase by over 20 seconds in 10:25.38.
  • Tyson Bowie earned two podium finishes, taking second place in the long jump at 6.29 meters (20-7.75) and third in the triple jump at a personal-best 12.12 meters (39-9.25).
  • Zion Wamley finished second in the triple jump at 12.71 meters (41-8.5).
  • Justin Speirs earned a second-place finish in the 400-meter hurdles at 58.19 seconds.
  • Austin Foote (personal-best 16:16.55) finished second in the 5,000-meter run.
  • Dylan Haun finished second in the high jump at 1.80 meters (5-10.75).
  • Mike Heinz (51.62) and Isaiah Myers (52.27) finished third and fourth, respectively, in the 400-meter dash.
  • Salisbury's 4x400-meter relay team of Speirs, Myers, Charlie Koeneke and Heinz crossed in third place in 3:35.05.

  • The Sea Gulls will head down to Myrtle Beach, S.C., for the three-day Alan Connie Shamrock Invitational on Mar. 17-19.
