Men's Swimming leaves Swarthmore with a win over Ursinus

SWARTHMORE, Pa. – The Salisbury University men's swimming team returns home from the Swarthmore Invitational with a win over Ursinus and five records.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Day two of the Swarthmore Invitational was split into two sessions, and in the morning session Salisbury broke program records from the start. In the day's opening 200-yard medley relay, the team of Lucas Mitchell, Dominic Kazzi, Owen Brewer, and Michael DeSimone finished second with a new record of 1:33.71.
  • Matt Merke built upon his success from the night before. In the 400-yard IM, Merke came home first with a record time of 4:04.97.
  • The Sea Gulls continued to find success during the morning session. Salisbury took home the top two spots of the podium in the 100-yard breaststroke. Brady Wolf took home first with a time of 57.70 while Kazzi was just behind him in second, finishing at 57.77.
  • In the second to last event of the morning session, the Sea Gulls occupied two steps of the podium once again, this time finishing first and third in the 100-yard backstroke. Mitchell finished first with a time of 52.04 and Matthew Arter took home third with a time of 53.22
  • The Sea Gulls closed out the morning session the same way they started it. The 800-yard freestyle relay team of Brewer, Christopher Knorr, Shane Hall, and Merke finished second while setting a new record as they finished at 6:58.84.
  • Salisbury started the evening session with a first-place finish as Merke was the first to finish the 1,650-yard freestyle, setting a new record with a time of 16:10.00.
  • In the 200-yard breaststroke, the Sea Gulls crowded the top-five. Wolf took the top step of the podium as he finished with a time of 2:07.63. Gabriele Miksa finished third with a time of 2:09.52 and Kazzi ended up fourth at 2:10.58.
  • Knorr added another first-place finish for Salisbury in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 1:52.75. Salisbury ended the Swarthmore Invitational with a third-place finish in the 400-yard freestyle relay after Swarthmore took home the top two spots. The relay team of Kazzi, Brewer, Kyle Skelly, and DeSimone finished at 3:08.76.
  • The previous night the Sea Gulls broke another record when Mitchell, Wolf, Knorr, and Brewer finished second in the 400-yard medley relay with a time of 3:24.19.
 
UP NEXT
  • The Sea Gulls take a break for the holidays, resuming competition on Sunday, Jan 14, at St. Mary's (Md.).
  • The meet is scheduled to start at 1 p.m. at the Aquatics Center.
