No. 4 Women’s Lacrosse tames Mustangs, 14-2

SALISBURY, Md. – The fourth-ranked Salisbury University women's lacrosse team rang in the 2023 season with a dominating 14-2 win over the Stevenson Mustangs on Saturday afternoon at Sea Gull Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Miranda Mears scored the first goal of the 2023 season for Salisbury with 10:54 left in the first. Her goal sparked a 4-0 first-quarter scoring run for Salisbury. The run was capped off with a Riley Hartman goal with just over a minute left on the clock.
  • Salisbury continued the run in the second quarter with three more goals from Emma Skoglund, Leah Vilov and Meridith Price  The goals extended Salisbury's lead to 7-0 with 8:45 left in the first half.
  • Stevenson got on the board with a free-position goal from Kate Yarusso at the 7:15 mark of the second.
  • Skoglund and Caroline Knight added two more goals to send the Sea Gulls into halftime with a 9-1 lead over the Mustangs.
  • After a battle for possession to start the third quarter, Hartman netted her second goal of the day followed by a Lauren Hackett tally that extended the Salisbury lead to 11-1 with just under five minutes left in the third.
  • Hannah Zimmer found the back of the net for the Mustangs with just under a minute left in the third quarter, but Maggie Sanders responded as time expired to push the Sea Gull lead back to double digits, 12-2.
  • Salisbury dominated possession and notched two more goals in the final period to give the game its final score of 14-2.
SALISBURY GAME NOTES
  • 11 different Sea Gulls found the back of the net in the season opener.
  • Emma Skoglund led the team with a hat trick.
  • Mary Hanzsche tallied three points on two assists and one goal.
  • Riley Hartman scored two goals in her return back from injury.
  • Madeline Davis caused a game-high five turnovers and collected four ground balls.
  • Kaitlyn Hunsinger earned the win in goal and tallied four saves.
STEVENSON GAME NOTES
  • Kara Yarusso and Hannah Zimmer scored the two goals for Stevenson.
  • Hanna Ash caused two turnovers.
  • Sophie Shucosky tallied eight saves in goal.
UP NEXT
  • Salisbury will host No. 17 Catholic on Saturday, Feb. 18.
  • The contest is scheduled to begin at approximately 3:30 p.m. following the conclusion of the men's game.
