No. 3 Softball prevails in doubleheader sweep over Stockton

SALISBURY, Md. – The third-ranked Salisbury University softball team was pushed to their limit by a tough Stockton Ospreys squad by the Sea Gulls prevailed in a doubleheader sweep on Sunday. The Sea Gulls took a 9-5 win in Game 1 before a walk-off hit by pitch by Emma Coldsnow allowed the Sea Gulls to outlast the Ospreys, 2-1, in eight innings.

HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME 1
  • Stockton got on the board first in the opening inning of the game. Michaela Luyber hit an RBI groundout to score Lilly James with the bases loaded. Lindsey Windsor later worked out of the bases-loaded jam with a strikeout.
  • Salisbury struck back with four runs in the bottom half of the first. Emma Coldsnow cleared the bases with a double down the left-field line. Taylor Scott scored later in the inning on a sacrifice fly by Emily Stockman to push Salisbury's lead to 4-1.
  • The Sea Gulls tacked on two runs in the bottom of the third to extend their lead to 6-1. Carrie Jacoby smacked a double to left field to score Jillian Dawson. Two batters later, Natalie Paoli lined a single to center to plate Alayna Gigliotti from second base.
  • Three runs came across for Stockton on three straight singles to chip into the Salisbury lead, 6-4, in the fourth.
  • The Ospreys brought it to within one, 6-5, in the top of the sixth with a James RBI double to left field.
  • However, Salisbury added three insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth. Dawson blooped an RBI single to right to plate Emily Challender. Two batters later, Lauren Meyers skipped a single down the left-field line to score Abby Mace and Sam Flowers to push SU's lead to 9-5.
SALISBURY GAME NOTES – GAME 1
  • Emma Coldsnow drove in three with an RBI double in the first inning.
  • Abby Mace and Jillian Dawson each scored twice at the top of the lineup. Mace was walked three times.
  • Lauren Meyers recorded a pair of RBIs in the sixth inning.
  • Lindsey Windsor and Nicole Ortega (W, 2-0) each struck out five batters in a little over three innings of work. Windsor allowed four unearned runs in her start.
HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME 2
  • Savannah Sheats was in a jam in the second inning after a leadoff double. Sheats was able to work out of the jam with a strikeout on Vanessa Tancini.
  • Back-to-back hit by pitches allowed Stockton to get on the board first when Megan Dignam was hit with the bases loaded to score Charli Czaczkowski.
  • Salisbury tied the game at one in the bottom of the fifth inning when Lindsey Windsor pitched hit and smacked a double to center to score Taylor Scott from second base.
  • With the international tiebreaker rules in extra innings, Salisbury was able to load the bases in the bottom of the eighth. Emma Coldsnow took the opening pitch of her at-bat in the leg for the walk-off hit by pitch to take the 2-1 win in extras.
SALISBURY GAME NOTES – GAME 2 UP NEXT
  • Salisbury will head south to Virginia Beach to take on the seventh-ranked Virginia Wesleyan Marlins on Wednesday, March 1.
  • The doubleheader is set to begin at 1:30 p.m.
