No. 1 Softball falls in pitcher’s duel with No. 7 CNU, 1-0, to open C2Cs

SALISBURY, Md. – Both Lindsey Windsor and Kate Alger were nearly unhittable but the No. 7 CNU took advantage of rare defensive miscues by the top-ranked Salisbury University softball team to take the 1-0 win over the Sea Gulls in the 2023 Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference (C2C) Softball Championships.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Lindsey Windsor got in a bit of trouble in the top of the first. With two runners on and one out, Emily Stockman caught Bianca Palmer-Scott stealing at third base. A batter later, Isabel Hall roped a shot to center field that looked to score at least a run but Abby Mace made an acrobatic, leaping catch to keep the game scoreless.
  • Both pitchers were dealing throughout the middle of the game. It took until the sixth inning for a runner to reach third. After Palmer-Scott reached on an error, Nicole Apai hit a double to the left-center gap that just got past an outstretched Mace to put two runners in scoring position. After a walk to Brooke Greaver, Windsor nearly worked out of the bases-loaded, no-out jam. She struck out Hall and forced Meredith Brickner to foul out. Kendall Bentley popped up the two-out matchup to the infield but the ball was misplayed to allow Kensley Hess to score from third but Madi Lemon got Jules Donnelly out at home to limit the damage to a run.
  • Salisbury looked to tie the game in the bottom half of the seventh. Carrie Jacoby led off the inning with an infield single but Kate Alger was able to retire the rest of the Salisbury bats in order to force SU to the elimination game.
SALISBURY GAME NOTES
  • Lindsey Windsor (L) was the hard-luck loser after pitching a complete-game, four-hitter. She struck out six, only walked two and allowed an unearned run.
  • Windsor, Carrie Jacoby and Emily Stockman each tallied a hit against Kate Alger.
CNU GAME NOTES
  • Brooke Greaver led the Captains with a 2-for-2 effort at the plate.
  • Caroline Pollack and Nicole Apai each recorded a hit against Lindsey Windsor.
  • Kate Alger (W) avenged last week's loss to CNU with a three-hit shutout. She struck out four, walked two and got 13 Sea Gulls to fly out.
UP NEXT
  • Salisbury will play Mary Washington in the elimination game tomorrow at 11 a.m.
  • The winner will have to beat CNU twice to claim the C2C Championship.
  • The elimination game winner will face CNU at 2 p.m. on Friday.
