FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The Salisbury University men's track and field team won its first conference gold in eight years, riding eight individual titles to the top of the podium at the 2023 Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference (C2C) Outdoor Championships, hosted by the University of Mary Washington on Sunday at the Battleground Athletic Complex.
The Sea Gull men racked up 200 points over the two-day meet on the way to their 17th outdoor championship and first since winning the Capital Athletic Conference (CAC, now C2C) title in 2015. Christopher Newport finished a distant second with 176 points, followed by UC Santa Cruz (173), Mary Washington (55) and St. Mary's (Md.) [13].
The Sea Gull women earned a third-place finish with a total of 89 points. CNU won the women's gold with 241 points with UCSC (179) taking second. Mary Washington (41) and St. Mary's (41) rounded out the top five.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Men
- Kai Smith was named Men's Track Athlete of the Meet after winning three gold medals. He set personal records to break the tape in both the 200-meter dash (21.61 seconds) and the 400-meter run (48.48 seconds).
- Smith also served as the first leg of the winning 4x400-meter relay team; Smith, Hayden Myers, Ryan Temple and Mike Heinz combined for a time of 3:22.32, half a second faster than second-place UCSC.
- Cameron Hasko three-peated as C2C champion in the javelin throw, winning the gold with a distance of 59.58 meters (195-5.75). Keifer Thomas finished right behind Hasko in second with a personal-best 52.62 meters (172-7.75), while Jacob Reeves made it a podium sweep by taking third at a personal-best 47.05 meters (154-4.25).
- Salisbury also swept all three medals in the discus throw. Logan Kelsch set a personal record of 46.04 meters (151-0.5) to win the conference title, with Mason Breeze (45.65m, 149-9.25) and Reeves (personal-best 42.65m, 139-11.25) earning the silver and bronze, respectively. JJ McCauley also slotted sixth at 38.08 meters (124-11.25).
- Gavin Shaffer broke the tape in the 110-meter hurdles, smashing his personal record with a time of 15.22 seconds.
- The Sea Gulls' six event championships give them eight gold medals for the weekend after Luis Smith won the shot put and hammer throw titles on Saturday.
- Heinz won the silver in the 400-meter run after crossing less than a second after Smith in a personal-best 49.12 seconds. Temple took sixth in the event in 50.41 seconds, also a personal record.
- Salisbury placed three in the top six of the 100-meter dash. Jacob Shelton grabbed second place in 10.80 seconds, followed by Sherrod Frye (11.03) in third and Ryan Kramer (11.21) in sixth.
- Frye (22.15, third) and Shelton (22.45, fifth) also earned top-five finishes in the 200-meter dash.
- The 4x100-meter relay team of Shelton, Frye, Kramer and Smith came within six-hundredths of a second of the win, settling for silver in 41.65 seconds.
- Rashawn Markman followed up his silver in the long jump with a second-place finish in the triple jump at 14.65 meters (48-0.75). Frye (personal-best 13.84m, 45-5) took third in the event, with Jon Alicea (personal-best 13.18m, 43-3) slotting in sixth.
- Andrew McGinley finished third in the high jump at 1.93 meters (6-4).
- Tristan Dutton took sixth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in a personal-best 10:28.80.
- Connor Kinch finished sixth in the 1,500-meter run in a personal-best 4:03.11.
- Matt Grossi grabbed sixth in the 5,000-meter run in 15:53.75.
Women
- Kailey Jarboe earned two more medals by finishing second in the javelin throw at a personal-best 22.02 meters (72-3) and third in the discus throw at 29.94 meters (98-2.75). Jarboe finished on the podium in all three throwing events after winning bronze in the shot put and hammer throw on Saturday.
- Marlyse Haack set a personal record and won the silver in the triple jump at 10.99 meters (36-0.75). Emma Christman finished fifth at 9.94 meters (32-7.25).
- The 4x400-meter relay team crossed the finish in second place, with Haack, Abby Simmons, Destinee Ekanem and Karia Forvil posting a time of 4:18.60.
- Forvil, Haack, Christman and Mia Hill teamed up for a third-place run in the 4x100-meter relay in 49.86 seconds.
- Alyssa Santoro earned the bronze in the 5,000-meter run in a time of 18:52.37. Madi Sisson crossed fifth in 19:29.72, a personal record.
- Haack (26.29) finished fifth in the 200-meter dash, while Hill (personal-best 26.57) crossed right behind in sixth.
- Rachel Roberts (12:43.64) and Leah Snyder (13:30.43) finished fifth and sixth, respectively, in the 3,000-meter steeplechase.
- Simmons earned a fifth-place finish in the 800-meter run in a personal-best 2:26.34.
- Forvil took sixth in the 100-meter dash in 12.93 seconds.
