No. 1 Softball storms past Rowan, 14-1, to set new win record

MARSHALL, Texas – The top-seeded Salisbury University softball team used a seven-run first inning and a six-run seventh inning to roll past the sixth-seeded Rowan Profs, 14-1, on Saturday and advance in the NCAA Championships.

Salisbury's record now sits at 46-4 and set a new program record for the most wins in a season, besting the previous mark of 45 set by the 2003 team.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Sea Gull bats started the game on fire. The team batted around and scored seven runs in the opening inning of the game. After a one-out double by Lindsey Windsor, Carrie Jacoby drove Windsor with an RBI single. Back-to-back singles by Natalie Paoli and Maddison Lednum led to an RBI fielder's choice to score Jacoby. Two batters later with the bases loaded, Lauren Meyers cleared the bases with a three-run double to right-center field. Windsor got a chance to bat again in the inning and brought in Meyers and Madi Lemon with a two-run single to push the lead to 7-0 in the first.
  • Windsor was rolling through four innings. She limited the Rowan offense to one hit and was one over the minimum in her start.
  • Salisbury put the run-rule in effect in the top of the sixth inning. After loading the bases, Paoli put down a picture-perfect bunt in front of the pitcher to score Mace from third base.
  • The Profs escaped the run-rule in the bottom half of the sixth. After a leadoff double by Devyn DiPasquale, Nicole Ortega nearly worked out of the inning with back-to-back flyouts before Breanna Bryant put the first run on the board for Rowan with a single up the middle that just got under the outstretched glove of Paoli at short.
  • The Sea Gulls got the runs back and then some in the top of the seventh inning. Lemon drove in a pair of runs with a single down the right-field line. After Jacoby hit an RBI single to left, Mace scored on a wild pitch from third. Back-to-back RBI singles by Paoli and Lednum put SU up 14-1 in the final frame.
  • Madison Taylor closed out the game with a clean seventh inning to allow SU to advance.
