Late-inning magic sends No. 1 Softball to national championship series

MARSHALL, Texas – The top-seeded Salisbury University softball team erased a four-run seventh-inning deficit and bounced back from the loser's bracket to sink the fifth-seeded and second-ranked Berry Vikings, 5-4, in eight innings to clinch its trip to its fourth national championship series.

Salisbury will enter the final series with a 48-4 overall record.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Berry struck first in the opening inning of the game. After a bunt single, an error and a walk loaded the bases, back-to-back fielder's choices put the Vikings ahead 2-0.
  • Berry got a run in the fourth and fifth innings, highlighted by a home run by Anna Jackson to put the Vikings up 4-0 heading to the final innings.
  • Down four runs in the seventh inning, Salisbury started the comeback. Sam Flowers started the inning with a leadoff single. The Sea Gulls loaded the bases with walks to Madi Lemon and Lindsey Windsor, Carrie Jacoby cleared the bases with a three-run double to left-center to cut the deficit to 4-3.
  • Natalie Paoli tied the game at four with a single to center field to plate McKenna Horner from second base and send the game to extra innings.
  • A scoreless eighth inning by Savannah Sheats gave Salisbury a chance to win the game in the eighth inning. An Emily Stockman leadoff single and a sacrifice bunt by Flowers put Taylor Scott into scoring position. Facing a 1-1 pitch, Lauren Meyers pulled a rise ball past the diving center fielder to allow Scott to score and send the Sea Gulls to the national title series.
