NCAA Championship road ends for No. 2 Baseball against No. 19 ETBU

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – The second-ranked and second-seeded Salisbury University baseball team saw its third straight NCAA Division III Baseball Championship appearance come to an early conclusion at the hands of the the 19th-ranked and seventh-seeded East Texas Baptist Tigers, 21-7, on Sunday night at PG Cares Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Sea Gulls jumped out to a big lead early with six runs in the top of the first inning. Danny Sheeler cranked a one-out solo home run to right to get things moving, then after a walk Kavi Caster, Stephen Rice and Scott Cameron strung together three straight singles, with Cameron's driving in a pair of runs to put SU up 3-0.
  • After another walk loaded the bases back up, Patrick Campbell tagged a two-run single into right and a third run came home on an error to make it 6-0.
  • Salisbury tacked on one more run in the second as Sheeler singled, moved up on a sac bunt and scored on a Rice RBI base knock to increase the lead to 7-0.
  • The Tigers began their comeback in the home second. Brett Wagner led off with a single and two batters later Nick Massarini tripled him home, later scoring on a Nick Chavez single. After a sac bunt, Jacob Evangelista socked an RBI double to get ETBU within 7-3.
  • In the third, Jordan Hara reached on an error and came around to score on a second SU error to make it 7-4.
  • The fourth proved to be the game-changing inning for ETBU. The first three batters reached on two singles and an error, then Carrson Wilson drew a walk to force in a run. Ben Lea came up next and belted a go-ahead grand slam deep to left to springboard the Tigers ahead 9-7.
  • ETBU posted another five-spot in the fifth, with Hara delivering an exclamation point of a two-run homer, boosting the lead to 14-7.
  • The Tigers left the yard again in the sixth as part of a three-run frame, with Wagner's two-run blast making it 17-7.
  • Wilson doubled home another run in the seventh, then Chavez delivered the final nail in the coffin with a three-run homer in the eighth to give the game its final 21-7 margin.
SALISBURY GAME NOTES
  • Danny Sheeler finished 2-for-5 with a solo home run and two runs scored. His 14th homer of the season brings him into a tie with Jacob Ference for the Sea Gull single-season home run crown.
  • Scott Cameron went 2-for-3 with a run and two RBIs and was hit by a pitch for the 29th time this season, breaking a tie with Justin Meekins (2017) for the most in program history.
  • Stephen Rice batted 2-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored, while Patrick Campbell went 1-for-3 with two rib-eyes.
  • Robbie Hollenbeck (2-2) took the loss after surrendering Lea's go-ahead grand slam in the fourth, with two of those runs being charged to his ledger in a third of an inning.
  • Mitchell Wittkamp lasted an inning and a third in his start, giving up three runs on four hits with one walk and no strikeouts.
ETBU GAME NOTES
  • Ben Lea finished 3-for-4 with a grand slam, four runs scored and five RBIs to lead the Tiger bats.
  • Brett Wagner went 4-for-6 with a homer, two RBIs and three runs scored.
  • Nick Chavez homered, scored four times and drove in four runs, finishing 3-for-5.
  • Jordan Hara also went yard, going 1-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored.
  • Matthew Irwin (2-1) entered from the bullpen in the second and shut down the Sea Gulls over five scoreless innings, scattering five hits with three walks and five strikeouts on 102 pitches.
  • Cody Johnson got the final out of the seventh, and Braden Karnes finished off the final two scoreless innings for ETBU.
THE WRAP
  • Salisbury finishes the 2023 season with a 36-8 record, a third straight Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference (C2C) championship and a third consecutive appearance in the Division III World Series.
  • The Sea Gulls set new single-season team records for home runs (65), doubles (117) and total bases (874).
