No. 2 Baseball falters against No. 16 Denison at D3 Showcase

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The second-ranked Salisbury University baseball team only managed two hits in a 9-1 loss to the 16th-ranked Denison Big Red on the second day of the D3 Showcase on Saturday night at First National Bank Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Sea Gulls put a run on the board in the bottom of the second inning. Adam Tommer tagged a two-out single to the opposite field, then Alex Seidleck doubled into the right field corner to score Tommer and put SU on top 1-0.
  • The Big Red answered with a haymaker in the top of the third as Erik Sundgren homered to right center to tie the game. DU then put men on the corners via a walk, wild pitch, and single, then executed a double steal to take a 2-1 lead.
  • Jake Welsch followed with an RBI double, took third on a wild pitch, and scored on an Owen Wilson fielder's choice to make it 4-1. After a steal, fielder's choice, and walk put two on with two out, Alex Vasquez singled in the fifth run of the inning for Denison to make it 5-1.
  • The score stayed static until the top of the seventh. With a man on third and one out, Welsch tripled to drive in a run and scored on a Wilson single that made it 7-1. Wilson made it to third on a wild pitch and a balk, and Colin Ravin doubled him home with two out. Ravin in turn scored on a Vasquez base knock to boost the Big Red margin to 9-1.
  • Salisbury only put three runners on base after the second inning, all on walks.
