No. 5 Women’s Lacrosse upended by No. 11 Wesleyan

SALISBURY, Md. – The fifth-ranked Salisbury University women's lacrosse team dropped a 13-7 decision against the No. 11 Wesleyan (Conn.) Cardinals on Sunday afternoon at Sea Gull Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Salisbury opened the contest with three unanswered strikes, beginning with unassisted goals from Mary Hanzsche and Erin Scannell in the first five minutes. Meridith Price hit a cutting Leah Vilov to push the Sea Gull lead to 3-0 with 9:38 remaining in the opening quarter.
  • The Cardinals collected their first goal of the afternoon with just over six minutes left in the period, and the defenses shut out their opposition to set the score at 3-1 heading to the second quarter.
  • The Sea Gulls got out to a quick start in the second, needing just 48 seconds to score as Vilov dished to Miranda Mears to nudge the lead to three, 4-1.
  • Wesleyan scored four consecutive goals and five of six across the remainder of the half, interrupted only by a Camryn Pepper finish (assisted by Vilov). The surge gave the guests a 6-5 advantage at the intermission.
  • The foes traded blows in the third quarter, with Pepper answering an early Cardinal goal before finding Mears five minutes later to parry another goal. The final 16 minutes of the contest were claimed by Wesleyan, who closed the contest on a five-goal run to secure the 13-7 victory.
SALISBURY GAME NOTES
  • Camryn Pepper netted three points on a pair of goals and an assist.
  • Leah Vilov tallied two assists and scored to reach three points on the afternoon.
  • Miranda Mears scored a pair of goals for Salisbury.
  • Erin Scannell scored her 10th goal of the season while tying for the team lead in ground balls (3) and caused turnovers (3).
  • Natalie Held secured a team-high four draw controls while forcing three Cardinal miscues and collecting two ground balls.
  • Elizabeth Hesen also caused three turnovers and nabbed a pair of ground balls.
  • Madeline Davis picked up three ground balls and caused a Cardinal error.
  • Kaitlyn Hunsinger was tagged with her first loss of the season, making five saves across the first 30 minutes. Gabriella Dorsey made three saves across the final 30 minutes in relief.
WESLEYAN GAME NOTES
  • Olivia Lai netted a hat-trick for the Cardinals in the win.
  • Laura Baine and Becca Dibble each finished with three points on two goals and one assist.
  • Kiara Tangney and Sam DeLeo each earned a brace on the afternoon.
  • Julia Noyes led the Cardinals with three caused turnovers.
  • Bridget Horst finished with a game-high seven draw controls, while Lindsey Diomede logged six draw controls and scored in the victory.

  • The Sea Gulls face a quick turnaround, welcoming the second-ranked Bullets of Gettysburg College on Wednesday, March 13.
