Game Recap: Softball |

Challender’s big day helps lead No. 2 Softball to two wins

SALISBURY, Md. – It was a banner day for third baseman Emily Challender of the second-ranked Salisbury University softball team, who led the Sea Gulls to a pair of victories against SUNY New Paltz and New York University during the Margie Knight Softball Classic pres. by Crown Sports Center on Sunday afternoon at Margie Knight Sea Gull Softball Stadium. With five hits in six at-bats, the junior from Lumberton, N.J. provided just the right recipe for a 3-1 win over the Hawks and a 6-4 comeback victory over the Violets.

HOW IT HAPPENED

GAME ONE
  • Bats were mostly silent for both sides through three innings, with both teams grabbing two hits each without much action on the bases.
  • Salisbury got all its action in during the bottom of the fourth, ignited by Natalie Paoli singling to right and Carrie Jacoby being hit by a pitch.
  • Pinch-running at third base, Camille Jones came home on an Emily Challender bunt single to give the Sea Gulls a one-run lead. Challender then stole second before Sam Flowers slapped a hard liner to first that went for an error, allowing Taylor Scott and Challender to score to make it 3-1.
  • After a single in the top of the seventh had New Paltz threatening, an error to score a run put more pressure on starter Isabella Purdy. A simple groundout to third ended the threat, though, and gave the Sea Gulls the 3-1 win.

SALISBURY GAME NOTES
  • Emily Challender paced the Sea Gull offense with three hits, one run, and one RBI. She also swiped second twice.
  • Natalie Paoli continues to heat up a quarter of the way through the regular season, notching two hits and a sac bunt.
  • The Sea Gulls struck out just twice in the game, showing continued patience at the plate.
  • Isabella Purdy (5-0) faced just four batters over the minimum in the win, striking out two and allowing a single unearned run.

NEW PALTZ GAME NOTES

  • Lindsay Roman (2-2) threw a complete game in the loss, allowing three runs (one earned) and striking out two.
  • Kelsey O'Brien notched a run and a hit on St. Patrick's Day.

GAME TWO
  • Lulls in the Sea Gull defense led to three errors and three runs for visiting NYU in the first inning. With runners reaching first and second, NYU took advantage of a fielding error at third to plate the first runner, and a second runner scored on a groundout. One more SU error at short off a bad hop let another Violets runner score to make it 3-0.
  • Lauren Meyers took first off an error in the second, and a solid single up the middle by Emily Challender pushed a pinch-running McKenna Horner home to get SU within 3-1.
  • Leading off the top of the fifth, Jillian Dawson slapped a single past third base and Abby Mace homered to left to tie the game at 3-3.
  • NYU snagged another unearned run in the bottom of the fifth, fueled by a Salisbury fielding error and Chloe Stone single, putting the Violets back up 4-3.
  • Emily Stockman and Mace walked in the top of the seventh, giving the Sea Gulls an opportunity in their final at-bat. Meghan Reed then came through with a clutch single up the middle, scoring Stockman to tie it at 4-4. After Natalie Paoli grounded out to advance both runners, Mace snatched home on a wild pitch in the dirt for a lead. Carrie Jacoby dropped a single into no-man's land in left field to bring Reed in and give SU an insurance run and a 6-4 lead.
  • Nicole Ortega locked it down from there, retiring NYU in order in the bottom of the seventh to continue Salisbury's perfect weekend.

SALISBURY GAME NOTES
  • Abby Mace, Carrie Jacoby, and Emily Challender each had two hits for the Sea Gulls.
  • Mace contributed two runs and two hits, including her third home run of the season, giving her 48 for her career and moving her within four of the Salisbury career record of 52 held by Kelly Waskewicz '10.
  • Nicole Ortega (5-1) picked up the win in relief with three strong innings, giving up just one unearned run.
  • Madison Taylor took a no-decision in her start, going four innings and giving up three runs (none earned) on no hits.

NYU GAME NOTES
  • The Violets notched more runs than hits against Salisbury, scoring four with just two hits by Emily Stone and Nicole Cicchetti.
  • Starter Marina Egbert (0-2) was tagged with the loss after throwing a complete game with six runs (five earned) against.
