No. 2 Softball shows no sign of stopping in sweep of Manhattanville

SALISBURY, Md. – The second-ranked Salisbury University softball team picked up its second straight doubleheader sweep, taking down the Manhattanville Valiants 14-2 and 8-0 in a pair of five-inning games to improve to 14-1 on Friday afternoon at Margie Knight Sea Gull Softball Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED

GAME ONE
  • With the bases loaded and two outs in the first, Emily Challender drew her team-leading fifth hit by pitch of the season, driving in the Sea Gulls' first run of the afternoon as Meghan Reed crossed home. Following up, Sam Flowers walked the traditional way to bring in Carrie Jacoby, then on a Valiant wild pitch, Lauren Meyers found the third run of the first inning for Salisbury.
  • In the second inning, Reed laid into a pitch for a single to left field, plating Jillian Dawson from third to make it 4-2.
  • Manhattanville cut the Sea Gull lead in half during the top of the third on a two-run single by Rachel Coleman.
  • Salisbury batted around in the bottom of the third, scoring six runs to go up 11-2 thanks to heads-up base running with three bunt singles to get the offense heating up. Flowers was the first Sea Gull to drive in a run during the third, bunting in a pinch-running Camille Jones. Following up, Emily Stockman hit another bunt RBI single that scored Challender, who also reached on a bunt single, from third.
  • With the bases loaded in the third, Abby Mace slapped a single to short, scoring Flowers for the Sea Gulls/ seventh run of the game. On a sacrifice fly to left, Reed had her second RBI of the day as the pinch-running Anna Hopkins crossed home. The offense continued putting runs on the board when Natalie Paoli singled up the middle to score Dawson, then Paoli and Mace scored on an error to second before Manhattanville stopped the bleeding with the margin at 11-2.
  • The Sea Gulls added a pair of insurance runs in the fourth as a pinch-hitting Karlie Wolfe drove in Lexie Delcollo and Emma Coldsnow with a single. Then after taking over at first for Meyers, Ellen Stockman also showed her skill with the stick, getting the Sea Gulls' 14th run of the game with a single for Reed to score for the second time in the game.
SALISBURY GAME NOTES
  • Isabella Purdy (7-0) started in the circle for the Sea Gulls, pitching three innings of two-run ball en route to her seventh win of the season.

GAME TWO
  • Nicole Ortega drew the start for Salisbury, striking out two in the top of the first frame.
  • In the Sea Gulls' first at-bat of the game, Abby Mace hit a no-doubt home run off the scoreboard in right center for the offense to pick up where it left off in game one.
  • With two on in the second after Sam Flowers and Emily Stockman walked with one out, Mace brought them both home by doubling left center to put Salisbury up 3-0. Then by knocking a single to right center, Emily Challender drove in Mace from second base to make it 4-0.
  • After loading the bases with walks by Meghan Reed and Carrie Jacoby, Natalie Paoli drew one as well for one more Sea Gull run in the second to boost the margin to 5-0.
  • With two on and one out in the fourth, McKenna Horner and Jillian Dawson executed a double steal, then both runners moved up an extra base on a commotion at the third base bag, allowing Horner to score and Dawson to move up to third. Mace then hit a sac fly to lef to bring in Dawson and make it 7-0.
  • Needing one more run in the bottom of the fifth to end things, Reed hit a simple grounder to short that plated Dawson, who walked and stole second earlier in the inning, giving the Sea Gulls' their second run-rule victory of the day.
