No. 5 Baseball blitzes Widener, 22-3

CHESTER, Pa. – The fifth-ranked Salisbury University baseball team posted its largest margin of victory of the season, opening up a 19-run final tally in a 22-3 win over the Widener Pride on Tuesday afternoon at the Widener Baseball Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Sea Gulls put up a crooked number in its first turn at-bat. Andrew Kell walked to lead off the top of the first inning and advanced to second on a sac bunt. After another walk and a Dylan Winebrenner single to load the bases, Danny Sheeler drew a free pass to force in a run. Dom Frigiola followed with an RBI base knock to put SU up 2-0.
  • SU added another in the top of the fourth as Brian Wilson singled and eventually came around on a Kell RBI single to make it 3-0.
  • The Pride got back into it in the home fourth. With two on and one out, Ryan Bauerle ripped a two-run double to get Widener within 3-2.
  • Salisbury countered with three more in the top of the fifth. With men on the corners and no out, Winebrenner hit into an RBI fielder's choice, then after a pair of walks Adam Tommer singled home a run, followed by an RBI groundout by Wilson to boost the margin to 6-2.
  • Alex Savkov scored an unearned run on a two-out error in the bottom of the fifth to make it 6-3.
  • Tim Petrucelli doubled home a run in the sixth, followed soon after by a single and a rib-eye for Sheeler to make it 8-3.
  • The Sea Gulls broke it open in the final two innings. Six came home in the eighth on a Winebrenner two-run double, Wilson bases-loaded hit by pitch, Roman March two-run double, and Kyle Brex two-run single that made it 14-3.
  • As part of an eight-run ninth, SU got its runs on a Sheeler two-run home run, Wilson RBI single, bases-loaded walks by Trent Waire and Ethan Ruiz, an Alex Craig two-run single, and an RBI fielder's choice by Zach Geesaman to give the game its final 22-3 score.
SALISBURY GAME NOTES
  • Danny Sheeler finished a triple shy of the cycle, going 3-for-4 with a double, homer, three runs, and four RBIs.

  • Brian Wilson batted 2-for-4 with a steal, three runs, and three RBIs.
  • Tim Petrucelli doubled twice, going 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored.
