No. 5 Baseball’s rally falls short at Mary Washington

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The fifth-ranked Salisbury University baseball team staged a furious rally over the final two innings but ultimately came up two runs short, falling to the Mary Washington Eagles, 11-9, in Saturday afternoon's Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference (C2C) matchup at Dickinson Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Sea Gulls broke the ice in the top of the first inning as Andrew Kell singled and Dylan Winebrenner belted a two-run home run to left, putting the visitors ahead 2-0 early.
  • The Eagles got one run back in each of the first two frames. Jacob Christenbury led off the home first with a single and came around to score on a Noah Roots RBI groundout. In the second, Alex Purgason tagged an RBI double to score Bobby Ayscue to tie it at 2-2.
  • SU retook the lead in the top of the third as Danny Sheeler lifted a sac fly to center, scoring Adam Tommer to make it 3-2.
  • UMW punched back with a three-spot in the bottom of the third. With men on second and third and no out, Ty Lowe beat out an RBI infield hit. After a sac bunt, Ayscue brought the go-ahead run in on a sac fly, and Oliver Martin plated one more with a single to put the Eagles up 5-3.
  • The Eagles notched two more in each of the next two frames. In the fourth, Burke Steifman brought one home on a sac fly, then Christenbury scored on an error to make it 7-3. In the fifth, a run-scoring single by Christenbury and bases-loaded walk to Lowe made it 9-3.
  • UMW put up its final two-spot in the seventh as Christenbury scored on a passed ball and Steifman came home on an error by the catcher, boosting the margin to 11-3.
  • The Sea Gulls got back into the swing of things in the eighth. With a man on third and one out, Zach Geesaman rolled an RBI single up the middle. After a hit batsman and a walk loaded the bases, Kell plated two on a base hit to get Salisbury within 11-6.
  • SU could have had more but left the bases loaded as Lowe struck out Winebrenner to stop the bleeding for UMW.
  • In the top of the ninth, Salisbury got the engines going again as three straight singles produced a run with Geesaman providing the run-scoring knock. Trent Waire then hit into an RBI fielder's choice to score another. Ethan Ruiz and Kell singled to load the bases, then Roman March hit into an RBI groundout at first to plate Waire and make it 11-9.
  • With two out and the tying runs in scoring position, Eagle reliever Connor Hassan fanned Tim Petrucelli to preserve the win for Mary Washington.
