No. 2 Softball outflanks York (Pa.) in two

SALISBURY, Md. – The second-ranked Salisbury University softball team extended its winning streak to 17 games with a pair of dubs against the York (Pa.) Spartans on Sunday afternoon at Margie Knight Sea Gull Softball Stadium. The Sea Gulls took the opener 8-5 before earning a five-inning 12-0 victory in the nightcap.

HOW IT HAPPENED
GAME ONE
  • The Spartans drew first blood in the top of the first inning. After a two-out single and walk, Emma Wade rolled an RBI single up the middle to put YCP on top 1-0.
  • The Sea Gulls responded in kind in the bottom of the first. Emily Challender singled to lead off, then after a pair of walks to load the bases Lauren Meyers worked her own free pass to force in a run. Carrie Jacoby followed with a two-run single up the middle to give SU a 3-1 lead.
  • In the second, Abby Mace legged out a two-out double, then after a wild pitch Meghan Reed snuck a bouncing grounder through the left side for an RBI single to make it 4-1.
  • The Sea Gulls put up four more in the fourth. With two outs and the bases loaded on a walk and two singles, Meyers hit a grounder to third that was thrown away, allowing two to score. Jacoby and Emily Stockman followed with back-to-back RBI singles to put SU up 8-1.
  • York nibbled off a pair of runs each in the fifth and the sixth. With two runners on in the fifth, Gretchen Barstad hit a grounder to second that produced a run. Wade followed soon after with a two-out RBI single to left to make it 8-3, but Sam Flowers threw out the trailing runner at the plate to mitigate the damage.
  • With the bases loaded and one out in the sixth, Morgan Sauers drove in a run on a grounder to short that resulted in an error. Two batters later Barstad rolled an RBI single up the middle to make it 8-5.
  • That's as close as the Spartans would get, though, as Sydney Adolfson shut YCP down 1-2-3 in the seventh to secure the victory.
SALISBURY GAME NOTES
  • Carrie Jacoby feasted to the tune of three RBIs, going 2-for-3 at the plate.
  • Abby Mace finished 2-for-3 with a double and scored three runs.
  • Meghan Reed batted 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI, while Emily Stockman also had two hits and an RBI.
  • Nicole Ortega (12-1) battled in the circle for her 12th win of the season, giving up five runs (two earned) on eight hits with four walks and seven strikeouts on 128 pitches.
  • Sydney Adolfson reeled in her first save with a perfect seventh.
YORK GAME NOTES
  • Emma Wade finished 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs for the Spartans.
  • Gretchen Barstad batted 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI, while Olivia Turchi went 2-for-3 with a run.
  • Natalie Rietema (9-6) was knocked out after getting just one out in the first inning, ultimately allowing three runs on two hits and three walks.
GAME TWO
  • The Sea Gulls stuffed the bases loaded and got three runs out of it in the first inning. Abby Mace was plunked to lead off and stole second, then Emily Challender and Meghan Reed reached on wind-assisted singles to juice the bags. After a strikeout, Carrie Jacoby brought home the first run on a single to center. Lauren Meyers walked to force in another, and Emily Stockman singled home a third to make it 3-0 SU.
  • In the home second, SU put two on with two out after a walk and an error. Jacoby and Meyers each brought one in with back-to-back RBI singles to boost the margin to 5-0.
  • Mace flexed her power with two on and no out in the third, blasting a three-run homer through the wind to dead center to make it 8-0.
  • SU tacked on four more in the fourth on a Karlie Wolfe RBI single, Challender two-run knock, and Emma Coldsnow run-scoring base hit, giving the game its final 12-0 margin.
SALISBURY GAME NOTES
  • Abby Mace set the tone from the leadoff slot, going 2-for-2 with her 55th career home run, plus a double, steal, three runs, and three RBIs.
  • Emily Challender batted 2-for-4 with a run and two RBIs right behind Mace.
  • Carrie Jacoby and Lauren Meyers each drove in two runs, and Emily Stockman went 2-for-3 with an RBI.
  • Isabella Purdy (10-0) moved into double-digit wins with four scoreless two-hit frames, walking one and fanning two on 53 pitches.
  • Carly Angstadt spun a scoreless fifth to finish the job.
YORK GAME NOTES
