Game Recap: Softball |

No. 1 Softball brings streak to 25, takes two at Washington (Md.)

CHESTERTOWN, Md. – The top-ranked Salisbury University softball team's winning streak reached 25 games by virtue of a pair of triumphs over the Washington College Shorewomen on Thursday afternoon at the WC Softball Field. The Sea Gulls earned an 8-2 victory in the opener and pitched a 5-0 shutout in the nightcap.

HOW IT HAPPENED
GAME ONE
  • The Sea Gulls got on the board in the second inning. Carrie Jacoby doubled and Lauren Meyers reached on a bunt single to put runners on the corners. Pinch-runner Camille Jones then stole second and Jacoby scored on a bad throw by the catcher. Jones in turn scored on an error in right to put SU up 2-0.
  • In the third, Emily Challender doubled and Abby Mace singled to put runners on first and third again. Two batters later Meghan Reed beat out a bunt single to score Challender, then after Reed stole second Jacoby doubled both runners home to make it 5-0.
  • Sam Flowers doubled and eventually scored on a wild pitch to boost the lead to 6-0 in the top of the sixth.
  • The Shorewomen got their only runs across in the bottom of the sixth. With the bases loaded and one out, Nevaeh Unzueta rolled an RBI single up the middle. Becca Foulk followed with a bases-loaded walk to make it 6-2, but the Sea Gulls got out of the inning without further damage.
  • SU reinforced the advantage with two in the seventh. Mace singled, stole second, and came home on a base knock by Emma Coldsnow. Anna Hopkins in turn pinch-ran for Coldsnow and later scored from third on another error as Taylor Scott stole second, giving the game its final 8-2 margin.
SALISBURY GAME NOTES
  • Carrie Jacoby doubled twice, going 3-for-4 with a run and two RBIs.
  • Abby Mace went 2-for-4 with two runs and a stolen base.
  • Emily Challender and Sam Flowers each batted 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored.
  • Nicole Ortega (15-1) earned the win in relief with three scoreless two-hit frames. Ortega struck out four on the day.
  • Isabella Purdy made the start and tossed two scoreless innings.
  • Madison Taylor spun two scoreless innings to finish off the game.
WASHINGTON GAME NOTES
  • Nevaeh Unzueta finished 2-for-3 with an RBI to lead the Shorewomen.
  • Lilly Cook went 1-for-3 and scored a run.
  • Brynn Balliet (9-7) took the loss after giving up five runs (four earned) on eight hits in five innings.
GAME TWO
  • Abby Mace put a charge in the Sea Gulls with a solo home run in the third inning, and Natalie Paoli doubled the Salisbury lead to 2-0 with her own solo dinger in the fourth.
  • SU pulled further ahead with a trio of runs in the fifth. Emily Challender sparked the rally with a two-out single, then Mace doubled her home. Carrie Jacoby then reached on an error at short that allowed Mace to score, and Meghan Reed banged a two-sacker to left center to plate Jacoby and make it 5-0.
  • Washington threatened in the bottom of the fifth, loading the bases with two out, but Lindsey Windsor got Jenna Harper to line out to third to get out of the jam. The Shorewomen would only get one more runner on base the rest of the way.
SALISBURY GAME NOTES
  • Abby Mace went yard for the 13th time this season and 58th time in her Sea Gull career, finishing 2-for-4 with a double, homer, two runs, and two RBIs.
  • Mace's double gives her 50 for her career, moving her one within the all-time program record shared by four former players.
  • Natalie Paoli belted her fourth homer of the year, going 1-for-2.
  • Meghan Reed went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI.
  • Emily Challender and Carrie Jacoby each went 1-for-4 with a run scored.
  • Sydney Adolfson (4-0) gave up just one hit over four scoreless innings to secure the victory.
  • Lindsey Windsor recorded her first save of the year with three scoreless frames to close it out. Windsor gave up two hits and walked two while punching out three.
  • Salisbury continues to build on its longest winning streak in 11 years. At 25 games, the Sea Gulls are one away from matching their 26-game surge in 2013.
