No. 5 Baseball outdueled at No. 25 Randolph-Macon

ASHLAND, Va. – In a game that saw both sides build and give up multi-run leads, the fifth-ranked Salisbury University baseball team found itself on the short end of the seesaw in a 9-8 loss to the 25th-ranked Randolph-Macon Yellow Jackets on Thursday afternoon at Hugh Stephens Field at Estes Park.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Sea Gulls jumped out to an early lead with three runs in the first inning. With two on and one out, Danny Sheeler pegged an RBI single. Zach Geesaman brought in another with a squeeze bunt and Trent Waire singled home one more to put SU in the driver's seat, 3-0.
  • Dylan Winebrenner trotted home on a wild pitch in the top of the third to make it 4-0.
  • The Yellow Jackets came storming back to tie it in the home third. Jordan Hill singled with one out and came home on a Jon Quici double. After a groundout and a walk, Chaz Harvey blasted a three-run homer to left to bring things even at 4-4.
  • RMC took its first lead in the fourth as Matt Myers singled and eventually scored on a wild pitch to make it 5-4.
  • Salisbury retook the lead with a three-spot in the top of the fifth. Geesaman and Waire tagged back-to-back doubles to produce a run, then two batters later Dom Frigiola brought Waire home on a base knock. Frigiola eventually came in on a wild pitch that made it 7-5.
  • In the bottom of the fifth, with the bases loaded and two out, Myers cleared the bases with a double to right, vaulting the Yellow Jackets back in front 8-7.
  • RMC tacked on an insurance run in the eighth as Myers was hit by a pitch and soon after scored on an error at third to make it 9-7.
  • The Sea Gulls mounted a comeback attempt in the top of the ninth. Waire, Adam Tommer, and Frigiola strung together three singles to load the bases with no out. After a strikeout, Andrew Kell brought Waire home with a sac fly to center that got it to 9-8.
  • SU couldn't bring the tying run in, though, as RMC closer Sam Slevin fanned Tim Petrucelli to end the game.
