Mace ties home run record in No. 2 Softball’s sweep at McDaniel

WESTMINSTER, Md. – The second-ranked Salisbury University softball team continued to roll, picking up wins of 8-1 and 3-1 against the McDaniel Green Terror on Sunday afternoon at the McDaniel Softball Park and moving to 18-1 on the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
GAME ONE
  • Rebounding from a shaky situation in the bottom of the first with two runners on, starter Nicole Ortega pitched a clean second inning to preserve any early game pressure.
  • After an Emily Challender single and stolen base, Meghan Reed slapped a single to put runners on the corners in the top of the third. Natalie Paoli drove Challender in during the next at-bat with a single through the left side. Following a Carrie Jacoby single, the Sea Gulls had the bases loaded for Sam Flowers, who grounded out to second but drove in Reed from third. As Emily Stockman reached first on an error, Paoli crossed the plate to put Salisbury up 3-0 heading into the bottom of the third.
  • The Sea Gull offense picked up steam again in the sixth with a leadoff single by Abby Mace, who quickly took second on a steal and then used her speed for the fourth run of the game on a Green Terror error. After reaching on the error, Emily Challender found paydirt thanks to a McDaniel passed ball, the Sea Gulls' second unearned run of the inning. Doubling down the left field line, Stockman made it a 6-0 game as Meghan Reed also scored in the sixth.
  • McDaniel drove in its only run of the game in the bottom of the sixth, putting two on base in time for Anna Putnam to drive in a runner on a single.
  • History was made in the top of the seventh as Mace hit her 52nd career home run, a two-run shot to left, tying her for first all-time in Sea Gull softball program history in the statistic. The dinger boosted the SU margin to 8-1.

SALISBURY GAME NOTES
  • Entering the game batting .600 on the season, Emily Challender continues to be the Hit Queen with three hits in three at-bats, including a double, plus a walk.
  • Abby Mace led the way with two RBIs on her record-tying 52nd home run in the seventh inning.
  • Notching her tenth win on the season, Nicole Ortega (10-1) pitched 5.2 innings of no-run ball, striking out seven and walking just one – the leadoff batter for McDaniel.
  • Emma Coldsnow notched a double off the bench in relief of Emily Stockman behind the plate.

MCDANIEL GAME NOTES
  • Makayla Calamita was the top performer at the plate for the Green Terror, attributing for a hit, a walk, and a run.
  • Paytyn Shawyer had a late-innings double for McDaniel.
  • Libertie Schatzman (4-7) was tagged with the loss, pitching 6.1 innings with eight runs against (four earned) while striking out three.

GAME TWO
  • McDaniel was able to manufacture a run in the bottom of the third thanks to a leadoff walk and bunt that put a runner on second. A single up the middle gave the Green Terror a one-run lead that they would hold until the top of the fifth.
  • The Sea Gull offense came alive in the fifth, starting with a single by Lauren Meyers and followed up by walks by Sam Flowers and Emily Stockman, loading the bases for Jillian Dawson, who singled for two runs driven in to put SU up 2-1. Against a Green Terror relief effort later in the frame, Emily Chellender laid up a sacrifice fly for Salisbury to take a 3-1 lead.
  • With the run advantage, starter Isabella Purdy locked down to finish out the game with three clean innings without a hit or walk against.

SALISBURY GAME NOTES
  • Jillian Dawson proved as a threat from nine-hole, leading the Sea Gulls with two RBIs on her fifth-inning single for the tying and go-ahead runs.
  • Once again, Emily Challender had a hit, this one for a double, while also driving in a run.
  • Starter Isabella Purdy (9-0) maintained her perfect record with a complete-game effort, giving up one run on three hits and striking out five.

MCDANIEL GAME NOTES
  • Makayla Calamita led the way for the Green Terror again with a hit and RBI.
  • Bella Sylvester had two sacrifice hits.
  • Starter Amy Anderson (0-3) was tagged with the loss after three runs given up in four-plus innings. Reliever Arianna Kelly went 2.1 innings without giving up a run and striking out two.
