SALISBURY, Md. – For the 14th time in program history, the fifth-ranked Salisbury University women's lacrosse team is headed to the Final Four.
The Sea Gulls overcame a slow start to power past the seventh-ranked Washington & Lee Generals, 12-8, in the regional final of the 2024 NCAA Division III Women's Lacrosse Tournament on Sunday afternoon at Sea Gull Stadium. With the win, Salisbury advances to the national semifinals for another regular-season rematch against ninth-ranked William Smith on Friday in Salem, Va.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After five minutes of scoreless action, Mary Hanzsche fed Leah Vilov for the Sea Gulls' opening strike at the 9:37 mark. The Generals countered with the next four to close out the period. Julia Thomson found the onion bag three times during the run to put W&L on top 4-1.
- The teams traded the first two goals of the second quarter, then Erin Scannell netted a free position goal and Caroline Knight buried one from the right side to get SU within 5-4 at the 6:54 mark of the period.
- Salisbury continued to clamp down on defense, and Miranda Mears beat the shot clock with 1:47 left until halftime to knot it up at 5-5.
- Each side tallied one in the early portion of the third quarter. Then at the 6:28 mark, Camryn Pepper found Hanzsche for a man-up goal to put SU on top for the first time since Vilov's opening strike.
- Knight followed with a pair of goals, the latter of which came with seven ticks left, to give the Sea Gulls a 9-6 advantage at the end of the third.
- Shannon Timoney netted got the Generals within 9-7 with a goal at the 9:40 mark of the fourth quarter, but Salisbury answered with strikes from Knight and Vilov, building the margin to 11-7 with 7:28 to go.
- Knight added one more for good measure, and the Generals got a late strike from Hanna Bishop but it was too little, too late, as the Sea Gulls punched their ticket to Salem, 12-8.
