SALISBURY, Md. – Down 12-4 in the fifth inning, the ninth-ranked Salisbury University baseball team scored eight runs in that frame to tie it before ultimately allowing two runs in the ninth and falling to the eighth-ranked Salve Regina Seahawks, 14-12, in Game 2 at the Salisbury Super Regional of the 2024 NCAA Division III Baseball Tournament on Saturday afternoon at Donnie Williams Sea Gull Baseball Stadium.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Seahawks sent 10 men to the plate in an explosive top of the first inning. With the bases loaded and no out, Christian Homa scored the first run on a wild pitch. A walk loaded them up again and Tyler Cannoe hit into an RBI groundout. Hunter Yaworski followed with a two-run double and Wil McCarthy singled Yaworski home to put SRU in control, 5-0.
- The Sea Gulls began their comeback in the bottom of the first. Kyle Brex singled with one out and Tim Petrucelli walked, then Danny Sheeler laced a two-run double into left center to bring SU within 5-2.
- Salve Regina punched back in the top of the second. With two on and two out, Yaworski cracked a line drive three-run home run to right to make it 8-2.
- Adam Tommer dragged out a bunt single to lead off the home second, then two batters later Andrew Kell doubled to the wall in left center to score Tommer and get it to 8-3.
- In the top of the third the Seahawks got two men on with two out, and Homa lined a two-run triple to center to put SRU into double digits, 10-3.
- Sheeler walked to lead off the bottom of the third, took third on a Zach Geesaman single, and came home on a double play groundout to make it 10-4.
- The Seahawks tacked on two more in the fourth on a bases-loaded walk to Michael Breen and an RBI fielder's choice by Brandon Grover to get it up to 12-4.
- Salisbury made it a brand-new ballgame in the fifth. With men on the corners and one out, Adam Tommer legged out an RBI infield hit. Dom Frigiola came up next and clocked a three-run homer to dead center to bring the Sea Gulls within 12-8.
- Brex singled two batters later, and Petrucelli belted a tape-measure shot to right for a two-run homer to make it a two-run game at 12-10.
- Sheeler followed with a single and Geesaman belted his own two-run shot to left center, capping an eight-run inning and drawing SU even, 12-12.
- After stranding the bases loaded in the eighth, the Seahawks finally broke through again in the top of the ninth. Grover tagged a one-out single and stole second with two down. After an intentional walk, Matt D'Amato pounded one up the middle for an RBI single to score Grover and put SRU back on top. Cannoe then hit a grounder to short that was booted, allowing one more run to score and make it 14-12.
- Salisbury got the leadoff man on in the bottom of the ninth as Petrucelli walked. After a pair of fielder's choices and a wild pitch, pinch-hitter Ben Anderson popped out to Breen at short, who squeezed it in his glove and celebrated with his teammates after securing their first-ever trip to the Division III World Series.
