NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The fifth-ranked Salisbury University baseball team couldn't solve the mystery of lefty Dylan Weber, falling to the 10th-ranked Christopher Newport Captains, 6-1, in a Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference (C2C) showdown to cap the regular season on Saturday afternoon at Captains Park.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Captains established an early rhythm and scored a run each in the first three innings. In the opening frame, Scott Crosson walked, took second on a wild pitch, and eventually came home on a single by Lincoln Lubsen to put CNU up 1-0.
- In the second, Eric Wilson doubled and Crosson eventually brought him in on a sac fly to make it 2-0.
- In the third, Zach Dzarnowski walked and made it to second on a wild pitch, and Ayden Stuffel tagged a single to right to bring him in and make it 3-0.
- The Sea Gulls got one back in the top of the fifth. Zach Geesaman powered a one-out double to left center, then two batters later Adam Tommer grooved an RBI single through the left side to get SU within 3-1.
- CNU punched back with three in the home fifth. With men on second and third and one out, Stuffel beat out a squeeze bunt for a run-scoring single. Gus Croll followed with his own RBI knock, and a single and a walk to Jake Benedict forced in another to boost the Captains' margin to 6-1.
- Salisbury couldn't find an answer for CNU starter Dylan Weber, who struck out the side in the ninth inning to finish his own job and secure the victory.
SALISBURY GAME NOTES
- Adam Tommer finished 1-for-3 with an RBI.
- Zach Geesaman doubled and scored the Sea Gulls' only run, going 1-for-3.
- Tim Petrucelli and Trent Waire each singled to account for the rest of SU's hits on the day.
- Ethan Hirschfeld (4-2) took the loss after giving up two runs on three hits in an inning and a third to start.
- SU is now locked into the two-seed in next week's C2C Tournament, finishing 2-2 in conference play.
