SU Athletics logs record service hours during Fall 2024 semester

SALISBURY, Md. – Once again living up to its reputation as a pillar of the Greater Salisbury community, the Salisbury University Department of Athletics and Campus Recreation received its final service statistics from the fall 2024 semester, as registered by the Helper Helper tracking app.

In total, from Aug. 19 through Dec. 13, Sea Gull student-athletes logged a total of 7,158 hours of community service – more than the entire 2023-24 academic year combined – generating an economic impact of $239,738 for the community. Department-wide participation rose to an all-time high, with 95 percent (672-of-710) SU student-athletes volunteering across 2,541 commitments during the semester, good for an average of 3.8 opportunities per student-athlete.

Salisbury engaged in an aggregate 73 service opportunities supporting 11 Greater Salisbury organizations. Among those that drew the most student-athlete commitments were the Hope and Life Outreach (HALO) Center, Sea Gull Century, Wicomico County Public Schools, Special Olympics Maryland Lower Shore, and the City of Salisbury Zoo.

"Our Sea Gull student-athletes have the unique opportunity to not only excel in their respective sports," said SU Director of Athletics and Campus Recreation Monica Polizzi, "but to lead by example both in our on- and off-campus communities, showing that true excellence lies in giving back and serving our community with the same dedication and heart. We continue to be proud of their commitment to serving others and impacting our community in a positive way."

Salisbury University is a proud member of NCAA Division III with primary membership in the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference, along with affiliate membership in the New Jersey Athletic Conference (football, men's & women's swimming) and the Coastal Lacrosse Conference (men's lacrosse).
