SALISBURY, Md. – The ninth-ranked Salisbury University baseball team showed fight late but couldn't climb all the way out of the hole, falling to the Montclair State Red Hawks 5-3 on Saturday afternoon at Yogi Berra Stadium.
The Sea Gulls opened the scoring in the second inning. With two down and the bases loaded after a single and two walks,
Cole Swift reached on an error at short, scoring two runs to put SU on top 2-0.
MSU stole a run back in the fifth after putting men on the corners with no out. Brody Diers was caught stealing second base, but Michael Murphy scored from third on the throw, cutting the Red Hawk deficit in half. Then with two on in the sixth, Billy Tigar singled home another run to knot it up at 2-2.
The Red Hawks seized control in the seventh, plating two runs on a double by Matt Shuhet and another on a Tigar sac fly to take a 5-2 lead.
Just like on Friday, Salisbury did not go quietly in the ninth. With two on and one out,
Ben Anderson came up to pinch-hit and singled home a run to get SU within 5-3 and put the tying runs on base. MSU held the line from there, though, getting the next two batters to fly out and ground out to secure the victory.
