SALISBURY, Md. – The sixth-ranked Salisbury University women's lacrosse team used a pair of 7-0 runs to cruise to a 16-4 win over the Cortland Red Dragons on Wednesday afternoon at Sea Gull Stadium.
Audrey Harrington got the Sea Gulls (5-2) on the board first, posting up and dumping in a solo score to give SU an early edge. Cortland responded with an eight-meter finish to tie the game at one before a trio of Sea Gulls –
Miranda Mears,
Regan McDonnell and
Julianna Ott – tickled the twine in the back half of the quarter to establish a 4-1 SU advantage.
A quiet start to the second stanza was interrupted when
Ally Mathis joined the scoring column at the 8:38 mark to extend the lead to four. Another Sea Gull blitz ensued as
Alexandra Parker set up goals by Mears and
Abby Lantos before
Avery Dunbar and
Grace Doyle connected for SU's seventh straight and fourth in under four minutes, 8-1.
The visitors got one back before intermission and sandwiched Ott's second tally with a pair of third-quarter goals to cut the margin to five with 8:11 left in the period. The Sea Gull engine roared to life once more as Harrington sent in her second of the day before assisting a third finish for Mears just 50 seconds later, helping the hosts tote an 11-4 lead into the fourth.
Salisbury thumped the fairy tale shut in the fourth, blanking Cortland while netting five in the final 15 minutes. Dunbar assisted McDonnell and Lantos scores while Harrington and Doyle added unassisted strikes and
Audrey Mumford helped
Ellery Stamp beat the final buzzer and set the 16-4 final.
