No. 7 Baseball pounds Oswego State in twin bill

Williams pitches into ninth to win opener

SALISBURY, Md. – The seventh-ranked Salisbury University baseball team scored 26 times over two games against the Oswego State Lakers, winning the opener 10-3 and the nightcap 16-6 in eight innings on Sunday afternoon at Donnie Williams Sea Gull Baseball Stadium.

GAME 1
The Sea Gulls scratched their first run across in the third inning. Trent Waire led off with a triple to right field, then on the next pitch TJ Morris dunked a base hit into shallow right to score Waire and put SU on top 1-0. Salisbury tallied another in the fourth on a two-out bases-loaded wild pitch, with Noah Burroughs coming across to make it 2-0.

The Lakers cut their deficit in half in the top of the sixth after Patrick May led off with a double and later scored on a two-out RBI single by Tishawn Featherstone. SU got that run back in the bottom of the sixth as Burroughs led off with a triple and scored on a Jackson Inman RBI groundout that pushed the margin back to 3-1.

Salisbury cashed in on a bases-loaded opportunity in the seventh. After Dylan Winebrenner brought one home on a sac fly, Burroughs rolled a two-run single up the middle to build the lead to 6-1. Inman followed with a double to put men on second and third, then Ben Anderson sliced a base hit into center to score both and make it 8-1.

The teams traded two runs each in their final turns at-bat thanks to mutual errors, but it wasn't enough to rattle SU starter Cole Williams, who pitched into the ninth for the first time in his career and earned his first win of the season.

Game Notes
  • Noah Burroughs brought the lumber from the cleanup slot, going 2-for-4 with a triple, two RBIs, and three runs scored.
  • Ben Anderson went 2-for-5 with a pair of rib-eyes.
  • TJ Morris drove in a run and scored another, finishing 1-for-3.
  • Jackson Inman doubled and drove in a run, while Trent Waire tripled and scored one.
  • Cole Williams (1-0) went a career-long 8.1 innings for the win, giving up three runs (two earned) on six hits with two walks and a career-high seven strikeouts on 119 pitches.
  • Tyler Villa got the last two outs of the ninth to finish off the dub.

GAME 2
The Sea Gulls brought the party to the plate early, sending 17 men to the plate in the first and scoring 11 runs on eight hits and three Laker errors to go up 11-0. Danny Sheeler provided the exclamation point with a long two-run home run to right field – his first of the season – as part of SU's second double-digit first inning in three games.

OSU clawed back a pair in the fourth, then in the top of the eighth Patrick May belted a three-run double as part of a four-run outburst that got the Lakers within 11-6.

Salisbury answered in the home eighth by batting around for the second time and triggering the 10-run rule. Jackson Inman led off with a triple and scored on a Ben Anderson RBI base hit. Cole Swift pinch-ran for Anderson and came all the way around on a stolen base, sac bunt, and wild pitch. Then after a double and single put men on the corners, BK Wilson legged out a run-scoring drag bunt up the first base line, and another two scored on a bases-loaded walk and a wild pitch, pushing the margin to 16-6 to end the game.

Game Notes
  • Danny Sheeler batted 3-for-5 with a homer, two runs, and two RBIs, plus a stolen base. Sheeler's 22nd career home run gives him sole possession of sixth place on the all-time Sea Gull leaderboard; he sits four back of fifth-place Dave Westervelt's 26 dingers.
  • Jackson Inman managed a four-hit game, going 4-for-5 with a triple, RBI, and two runs scored.
  • Noah Burroughs scored two runs and plated three more, finishing 1-for-4.
  • BK Wilson went 2-for-6 with a steal, three runs, and an RBI, while Dylan Winebrenner finished 3-for-5 with a rib-eye and two runs scored.
  • Salisbury has scored 10-plus runs in six of its first seven games, averaging 12 tallies per contest.
  • Aiden Hankins (1-0) handled 3.1 innings in relief for his first win, giving up two runs on three hits with four walks and four punchouts on 68 pitches.
  • Ethan Hirschfeld pitched the first four innings in his start, giving up two runs (one earned) on four hits with two walks and a strikeout on 73 pitches.

The Sea Gulls will hit the road for the first time with a visit to Virginia Wesleyan on Wednesday. First pitch from Virginia Beach is slated for 2 p.m.
