ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. – The eighth-ranked Salisbury University baseball team swept a doubleheader from the Elizabethtown Blue Jays on Saturday afternoon at Kevin Scott Boyd Stadium, winning the opener 9-5 in 10 innings and slugging their way to a 10-6 victory in the nightcap.
GAME ONE
The teams traded a pair in the first inning. The Sea Gulls got on the board as
Danny Sheeler scored on an error and
Noah Burroughs singled home a run, while the Blue Jays answered with an AJ Lipscomb two-run single to knot it up at 2-2.
TJ Morris put SU back in front with a two-out RBI single in the fourth. Then in the fifth,
Dylan Winebrenner led off with a single and
Andrew Kell and
BK Wilson eventually strung together back-to-back two-out RBI doubles to make it 5-2. E'town got it all back in the home fifth, though, with Sawyer Martin's two-run double capping a three-run frame to make it 5-5.
After neither side could break through in the final four innings of regulation, Salisbury took advantage of some Blue Jay wildness in the 10th. Three Sea Gulls were plunked to load the bases, and Winebrenner cleared the bases with a three-run double. Burroughs followed with an RBI base knock to plate Winebrenner, giving SU a 9-5 advantage it would hold to the end of the game.
Game Notes
- Dylan Winebrenner proved the hero in extras with his go-ahead three-run double. He finished 4-for-5 with a pair of two-sackers and three runs scored.
- Noah Burroughs went 2-for-5 with two RBIs.
- Andrew Kell and BK Wilson each doubled home a run, while Danny Sheeler and Ethan Ruiz scored twice apiece.
- Bryce Sterling (1-1) earned his first win in relief, tossing a scoreless ninth and 10th with two strikeouts.
- Aidan Brinsfield made it four innings in his start, giving up a pair of unearned runs on four hits with one walk and six punchouts.
- Josh Rivera handled 2.2 scoreless no-hit innings out of the bullpen, fanning four before passing the baton to Sterling.
GAME TWO
Neither side could push a run across until the Sea Gulls pounced for two in the fourth inning. With two on and no out,
Dylan Winebrenner executed a bunt for a single and took an extra base on an error that allowed
TJ Morris to score.
Jackson Inman brought home another on a sac fly to put SU up 2-0.
Noah Burroughs homered in the top of the sixth to open up an eight-run stretch over the next three frames. An RBI knock by
Max Ehrhardt and a balk that scored
Andrew Kell made it a three-run sixth, and Inman singled home a pair in the seventh to make it 7-0.
The Blue Jays grabbed four back in the bottom of the seventh, including two on a homer by Mason Woolwine, to cut the deficit to 7-4. SU countered with a three-run homer by Winebrenner in the eighth to go back up 10-4, and a two-run flourish by E'town in the home eighth was too little, too late. Pitching for the second time in the twin bill,
Bryce Sterling spun a 1-2-3 ninth to lock away the 10-6 dub.
