No. 11 Softball blanks Westminster (Pa.) in NCAA Regional opener

SALISBURY, Md. – The 11th-ranked Salisbury University softball team got off on the right foot in their run through the 2025 NCAA Division III Softball Tournament, shutting out the Westminster (Pa.) Titans 6-0 in the first game of the Salisbury Regional on Thursday morning at Margie Knight Sea Gull Softball Stadium.

With the win, the Sea Gulls will play in the first game on Friday's regional docket at 11 a.m. against either 19th-ranked Pfeiffer or Mount Union. The winner of that game will advance to Saturday's regional championship, while the loser will play an elimination game at 4 p.m. on Friday.

SU got an early jolt in the form of a solo home run by Emily Stockman in the second inning, but the first portion of the game played out as a pitchers' duel between Justyce Richard and the Titans' Cheyenne Piper. Richard held Westminster to two baserunners over the first four innings, while the Sea Gulls scraped one more off Piper in the fourth on a Lexie Delcollo fielder's choice that allowed Ellen Stockman to score, making it 2-0.

Salisbury finally broke the game open with a four-run fifth. Jillian Dawson beat out a one-out bunt single, followed by an Ellen Stockman base knock and a double steal. Carrie Jacoby doubled home both runners, and Emily Stockman followed with her second dinger of the game to put SU ahead 6-0. The Sea Gulls would make the margin hold up as the Titans got just one more hit in the game.

GAME NOTES
  • Emily Stockman finished 2-for-3 with a pair of home runs and three RBIs. Stockman now has 12 big flies on the season and a pair of multi-homer games.
  • Carrie Jacoby batted 2-for-3 with a double, two runs, and three RBIs, while Ellen Stockman went 3-for-3 with a double, stolen base, and two runs scored.
  • Justyce Richard (11-1) gave up just one hit over five efficient innings of work, walking one and striking out one on a mere 36 pitches.
  • Carly Angstadt and Sydney Adolfson worked an inning each in relief to help finish off SU's two-hit shutout.

The Sea Gulls will await the result of the Pfeiffer-Mount Union game and face the winner at Margie Knight Stadium on Friday at 11 a.m. with a berth in the regional finals on the line.
