No. 5 Baseball edges No. 3 Denison, falls to No. 6 Lynchburg at D3 Showcase

Sunday game against Marietta canceled due to inclement weather

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The fifth-ranked Salisbury University baseball team earned a split in a pair of top-10 matchups at the D3 Showcase on Saturday at First National Bank Field, edging the third-ranked Denison Big Red 4-1 in a morning showdown before falling 12-1 in seven innings to the sixth-ranked Lynchburg Hornets in the evening.

GAME ONE

The Sea Gulls took advantage of some sloppy Big Red arms in the bottom of the second inning. After three walks to load the bases with one out, Ethan Ruiz hit a grounder to first. DU went home for the force, but catcher Andrew Fazio's throw to first hit Ruiz in the back, allowing Trent Waire to come around to score and put SU on top 1-0.

Denison countered in the third by loading the bases with no out but settled for just the tie after a run-scoring double play. The two sides remained deadlocked from there, each escaping trouble across multiple frames.

Salisbury finally broke the stalemate with a three-spot in the sixth. Ruiz worked a one-out walk and stole second base, then Mike Delgaudio ripped a go-ahead base hit to left. Nathan Tondreault followed with a double to plate Delgaudio, then after a strikeout and an intentional walk Griffin Shirk fisted an RBI single to left, giving SU a 4-1 cushion.

The Big Red threatened in the eighth, loading the bases with two out, but Bryce Sterling struck out Bobby Haarde to escape trouble. Then in the ninth the Big Red rallied again with two out, loading them up on a double, single, and hit batsman, but Sterling forced Kelly Crittenberger to line out sharply to Waire at short, sealing the deal on a top-three win for the Sea Gulls.

Game Notes
  • Nathan Tondreault delivered a 2-for-5 afternoon with a double, run, RBI, and stolen base.
  • Mike Delgaudio came off the bench and delivered the Sea Gulls' winning hit, finishing 1-fof-3 with a run and an RBI.
  • Ethan Ruiz reached base three times, going 1-for-2 with two walks, two steals, and a run scored.
  • Cole Williams (1-0) shut the Big Red bats down over 3.2 hitless innings in relief, walking two and striking out one on 53 pitches.
  • Bryce Sterling locked down his first save of the year, striking out three batters and scattering two hits and a walk over an inning and a third. With his seventh career save, Sterling moves into a tie with Eric Willey '09 for sixth on the SU career leaderboard.
  • Tyler Katz and Peyton Youngbar provided a bullpen bridge from Williams to Sterling in the eighth.
  • Tyler Villa lasted 3.1 innings in a no-decision, giving up one run on six hits and two walks with one punchout on 64 pitches.

GAME TWO

The teams traded volleys over the first two frames. In the top of the first, Nathan Tondreault led off with a single, stole second, and scored on a Conner Seeley RBI knock. Then in the bottom of the second, the Joe Munitz singled and Kyle Flora banged a two-run homer off the right field foul pole, putting the Hornets on top 2-1.

The scoring stood pat until Lynchburg cracked it open with a seven-run fifth. Benton Jones got it started with a bases-loaded walk and Jack Pokorak brought home two more with a single. After a flyout and a strikeout, Flora laced a two-run double to left center, and Conner Moore smashed a two-run homer to right for the capper to make it 9-1.

Salisbury loaded the bases but came up empty in the sixth, and in the seventh the hornets put it out of reach with three runs, riding a Pokorak two-run double to the double-digit threshold to stop the contest.

Game Notes
  • Nathan Tondreault finished 1-for-2 with a run, walk, and two steals in the leadoff slot.
  • Conner Seeley drove in the Sea Gulls' only run in the game with a base knock in the first.
  • Aidan Brinsfield (1-1) was saddled with the loss after surrendering six runs on six hits in four-plus innings.

The Sea Gulls' third game at the D3 Showcase on Sunday against Marietta has been canceled in anticipation of a snowstorm across the Mid-Atlantic region. SU will now return home to face Cairn on Wednesday, with first pitch at Donnie Williams Stadium set for 2 p.m.
