SALISBURY, Md. –
Mike Delgaudio absorbed the walk-off pinch-hit bases-loaded hit-by-pitch, delivering the seventh-ranked Salisbury University baseball team a 7-6 win over the Gwynedd Mercy Griffins on Tuesday afternoon at Donnie Williams Sea Gull Baseball Stadium.
The Sea Gulls landed the first punch in the second inning. With men on the corners and no out,
Mickey Haynes lashed an RBI single into left, then after a walk to load the bases
Nathan Tondreault hit into a run-scoring fielder's choice, putting the home side up 2-0.
The Griffins answered in the top of the third on back-to-back bases-loaded singles by Jimmy DeCarlo and Charlie Neal and a Karl Wissman RBI fielder's choice, taking a 3-2 lead. Salisbury didn't wait long to answer, pushing the tying run across in the home third on a
Conner Seeley double and
Trent Waire run-scoring knock that made it 3-3.
The teams stayed locked in a stalemate until the sixth when SU regained the edge. After
Ethan Ruiz and Tondreault executed a double steal to put two men in scoring position,
Max Ehrhardt rolled into a go-ahead RBI groundout and
Jackson Inman doubled one more home to push it to 5-3.
After the two sides traded tallies in the seventh, GMU emerged with new life in the top of the ninth after a leadoff walk, single, and sac bunt. Peter Burnley scored one on a wild pitch, and Neal trotted home on a game-tying RBI groundout by Wissman, knotting it up at 6-6.
The bottom of the ninth saw Waire reach on a leadoff HBP, then
Griffin Shirk pinch-hit and laid down a bunt that the catcher misfired to second. Haynes legged out a bunt single to load the bases, bringing Delgaudio to the plate as a pinch-hitter. On a 2-2 pitch, Delgaudio took one off the shin to force in the winning run and save the day for Salisbury, 7-6.
GAME NOTES
- Jackson Inman continued his hot run at the plate, going 2-for-5 with a double and an RBI. Inman has recorded an extra-base hit in five of his last seven games.
- Trent Waire and Henry Carbone each contributed two hits and a rib-eye while combining to score three runs.
- Conner Seeley doubled and scored a run as part of a 2-for-4 day.
- Mickey Haynes finished 3-for-5 with an RBI.
- Ethan Ruiz stole two bases on a day that saw Salisbury swipe six bags.
- In his first action in two weeks, Mike Delgaudio won it for SU with a walk-off RBI plunking in the ninth. Both of the Sea Gulls' walk-off wins this season have come at the hands of freshmen; Charlie Hartman played the hero on Mar. 1 against Arcadia.
- Bryce Sterling (1-0) was credited with the win; he surrendered two runs in the ninth to tie.
- Mason Walter lasted two-plus innings in his start, giving up three runs on one hit, one walk, and three hit batsmen.
- Garrett Beaver struck out six batters over three innings of one-run relief.
- Ethan Hirschfeld tossed a scoreless eighth and achieved a baseball rarity by striking out four batters in the frame. After punching out the first two, the third batter reached on a dropped third strike-turned-wild pitch. Undeterred, Hirschfeld froze Deven Ross on a 1-2 count to pick up strikeout number four.
The Sea Gulls will play their second of three days in a row with a visit to Ursinus on Wednesday. First pitch from Collegeville, Pa., is slated for 3:30 p.m.
