No. 2 Baseball fillets VWU, 20-6

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The second-ranked Salisbury University baseball team used an offensive surge in the middle innings on the way to a 20-6 seven-inning roasting of the Virginia Wesleyan Marlins on Wednesday afternoon at Perry Field.

The Marlins struck early with a trio of unearned runs in the first inning. With two on and one out, Israel Dozier grounded a single through the left side that was booted out in left field, allowing both runners to come around and Dozier to advance to third. Two batters later Nathan Bryant hit a comebacker to the mound that was misplayed, and Dozier came in to give VWU an early 3-0 cushion.

The Sea Gulls quickly countered in the second. Logan Stillerman drew a bases-loaded walk to force one home, then Ethan Ruiz hit into an RBI fielder's choice, and Cole Swift tied the game at 3-3 with a run-scoring double. VWU punched back in the third with another unearned three-spot, parlaying a walk and two errors into a pair of RBI singles and a fielder's choice to go back up 6-3.

Salisbury then brought a six-run sledgehammer in the fourth. With the bases loaded and one down, Nathan Tondreault laced a two-run single and Jackson Inman lifted a sac fly deep to center to draw SU even again. After another walk, Conner Seeley stroked a two-run double deep to center to give SU its first lead, and Griffin Shirk plated Seeley with a base hit up the middle to make it 9-6.

The Sea Gulls kept the foot on the gas in the fifth, putting up five more runs on a Mickey Haynes run-scoring double, Inman RBI groundout, and Seeley three-run dinger to right, his second of the year, boosting the margin to 14-6.

Ruiz bookended a six-run sixth at the plate, starting the fun with an RBI single and drawing a bases-loaded walk to get it to 20-6. The Gulls' bullpen then finished off four straight scoreless innings to wrap things up early on a mercy rule.
