No. 25 Softball splits day one of Raleigh Triangle Classic

RALEIGH, N.C. - The No. 25 Salisbury University softball program posted a split on the first day of the Raleigh Triangle Classic, Friday afternoon at the Walnut Creek Softball Complex. The Sea Gulls took care of Eastern Mennonite University 13-5 in five innings before falling to Piedmont University 6-5.

The SU offense was on full display in game one over EMU. Salisbury posted one run in the top of the first before exploding for six in the top of the second. Morgan Moxley led the inning off with a double to get things started before Karlie Wolfe and Sam Flowers both picked up hits.

Freshman Audrey March then started her career day, blasting a three-run home run and putting the Sea Gulls in front 6-0. Courtney Johnson followed that with a triple and would come around to score off a Madison Lepeonka RBI SAC bunt.

The Sea Gulls added two more runs in the third inning with two outs. Wolfe singled before March launched her second home run of the day. In the fourth, Camille Jones, Wolfe, and March all picked up RBIs to add to the totals.

Madison McGinnis earned the win in the circle for the Sea Gulls with three innings of work. Vita Waddell tallied two innings of work with three strikeouts and allowed zero hits.

Game One Notes
  • March finished with seven RBIs on three hits, with two being home runs.
  • Wolfe tallied a three-hit game, and Flowers posted a two-hit game.
  • The Sea Gulls posted 13 hits, while holding EMU to just three. Salisbury also left 11 runners on base.
  • SU also drew eight walks at the plate.
Salisbury carried the offensive momentum from game one into game two against Piedmont. SU served as the home team in this game and rattled off three runs in the bottom of the first.

All three runs came with two outs as Wolfe, March, and Johnson got the party started, continuing there stellar day. Alayna Gigliotti also joined the party with an RBI single. Piedmont added one run in the first and third innings, staying within striking distance early.

Flowers earned an RBI single that scored Jones, who doubled before her to extend the SU lead to 4-2 in the fourth. Piedmont scored two runs in the fifth to tie things up late. The Lions would go on to take the lead in the top of the sixth before adding another in the seventh and taking a late 6-4 lead.

Wolfe blasted a solo home run in the bottom of the seventh, but the Sea Gulls could not complete the comeback.

Game Two Notes
  • Wolfe posted a three-hit ball game.
  • Johnson and Gigliotti tallied two hit ball games.
  • Both teams posted 10 hits, but SU left seven runners on base.
The Sea Gulls are back at Walnut Creek tomorrow with two more games; they open with Randolph College at 11 a.m. before taking on No. 6 Rowan University at 1:30 p.m.
