Bullock, Cave honored with C2C Medal of Inspiration

SALISBURY, Md. - Salisbury University's athletics program is proud to announce that two of its dedicated student-athletes have been honored with the prestigious 2025-26 Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference (C2C) Medal of Inspiration. This esteemed recognition has been awarded to Nadia Bullock from the women's basketball program and Austen Cave from the cross country/track & field program for their remarkable perseverance, dedication, and contributions to their respective teams.

Bullock, a member of the women's basketball team, has demonstrated exceptional resilience throughout her college career. After suffering a severe ACL injury, Nadia faced a challenging path back to the court, involving multiple surgeries and an extensive rehabilitation process. Despite these setbacks, she remained an integral part of the team, serving as a mentor and motivator for her teammates. Nadia returned to play after 989 days and made significant contributions in her first game back, eventually playing a pivotal role in the team's victory against CNU.

She shared, "I feel incredibly honored to receive this recognition for my hard-fought battle back to the court this season. I never imagined my college career would be riddled with injuries as it was, and that after my freshman season, I'd be sidelined 989 days till I checked into another game. There were many times I wanted to throw in the towel and give up this dream, but every time I hit that ledge, I couldn't seem to do it. In my opinion, the best thing about basketball is that it's a team sport, and that's exactly the reason I couldn't give up so soon. My teammates and coaching staff were my driving factor in my return to the court. Of course, I had goals and expectations of myself this season, but the opportunity to compete alongside such an incredible group of women meant more to me than any personal achievement. I hope my journey can inspire other athletes to keep pursuing their dreams and goals, no matter how big or small. The road may not always look the way you expect, but perseverance, support, and belief in yourself can take you farther than you ever imagined. Thank you to everyone who stood by me throughout this journey. This recognition means more than I can put into words."

Head Women's Basketball Coach Aprile Guy commended Bullock's perseverance, saying, "Nadia is one of the most resilient players I have ever coached. She has a burning passion for the game, and she truly believes in this program. I watched Nadia make many sacrifices to really push herself both mentally and physically for the betterment of our team and to reach her goal of returning to the court. Two surgeries and a third rehab phase, and she never once wavered as a great teammate or a relentless worker. Through those 989 days between games, I saw Nadia become a much stronger person and leader. She always found a way to contribute and has been a huge part of our team's rise over the last three seasons, but her commitment and work ethic to finish her senior year truly inspired us all. I am so immensely proud of her and am glad I was able to be a part of her journey."

Cave, a member of the cross-country and track teams, has shown extraordinary determination by overcoming significant personal challenges. After being diagnosed with cancer three years ago, Austen fought through treatments to regain his strength and return to competitive athletics at the collegiate level. This season marked his most successful comeback, leading the cross-country team to a second-place finish at the C2C XC Championships and earning First Team All-C2C and All-Region honors. Additionally, he set a new school record in the 5000m event during the indoor season with a time of 15:03.72.

Reflecting on his journey, Austen expressed his gratitude, saying, "This award cultivates years of hard work both on my end and my family/teammates. When I was first diagnosed with cancer three years ago, I never thought I would be in the position to compete at the collegiate level again, much less find so much success. I want to thank my family and friends. Especially my mom, who told me cancer should not define me, and if I had a dream to chase it, and for Coach Jones, who stood behind me and gave me the opportunity to do what I love. Without these two pillars, I wouldn't be the athlete or person I am today; all my success stems from them and God who allowed me to chase my dreams."

Head Track & Field/Cross Country Coach Jim Jones praised Cave, stating, "Austen has been a great leader and student athlete for Salisbury University. He has overcome a great deal to help achieve the team and individual goals. I am so proud that he is receiving this award. It has been well earned through his dedication and determination."
