On September 1, 1974, the Sea Gulls stepped onto the national stage and became a member of the NCAA Division III. In just a decade, Salisbury State would become a dominant player in the division, and it was the wrestling team that gave SSC its first taste of national glory. In 1979, they earned the first individual national championships of any sport in the history of the school, with SSC wrestlers taking more individual titles than any other school represented in the tournament. During their first 10 seasons, SU Hall-of-Fame Coach Mike McGlinchey’s wrestlers boasted six individual national champions and 16 All-Americans.
