Sea Gull bats come alive in win over Diplomats

SALISBURY, Md. – The Salisbury University baseball team defeated visiting Franklin and Marshall College on Tuesday afternoon at Sea Gull Baseball Stadium, 13-1.

Salisbury (11-7) didn't waste any time lighting up the run column, scoring two runs in the second inning to take the lead before adding another three in the fourth on a Brad Keith double to right centerfield to unload the bases.

A double by Will Gutekunst in the fifth inning scored Simon Palenchar all the way from first base. Colby Dean then hit his first home run of the season in the following at-bat to push the lead to eight.

A two-run sixth inning was highlighted by RBI doubles from both Scott Ardoin and Jack Decker.

Three more runs would cross the plate for the maroon and gold in the seventh inning, including a pinch hit single up the middle by Tyler Mayo that scored Keith for the final Salisbury run of the game.

The Diplomats (5-8-1) had no answer at the plate, struggling to string together hits against starting pitcher Austin Heenan, who tossed seven scoreless innings while striking out seven batters and allowing only three hits and two walks. Heenan's third win of the season drops his era to 1.85.

Salisbury recorded 18 hits in the game, including five doubles. It is the most hits in a contest by the Sea Gulls since their 20-hit game in a 17-3 win over Washington College back on March 5.

The team returns to action on Wednesday, March 28 when it faces Capital Athletic Conference rival Wesley College at Sea Gull Baseball Stadium. First pitch is set for 3:30 p.m.
