Sea Gulls drop tournament opener to Presidents

SALISBURY, Md. – The No. 10 Salisbury University baseball team faced off against Washington & Jefferson College in the Salisbury regional on the first day of the NCAA tournament, but fell to the Presidents, 4-1.

The Presidents (33-11) broke into the run column first in the top of the third inning. With the bases loaded and one out, Mullen Socha delivered a clutch single straight up the middle of the infield to score teammates Justin Griffin and Spencer Howell and take a 2-0 lead.

The Sea Gulls (34-9-1) eventually cut their deficit in half in the bottom of the seventh inning. With only one out and runners on first and second, Matt Padeway grounded into a fielder's choice. The Presidents' shortstop tried to force a double player however, but wound up with a throwing error that allowed Brad Haas to advance home and make it 2-1.

Any momentum Salisbury had hoped to grab with the run was quickly smoldered by the Presidents, as James Artale sent a two-out, two-run blast over the right field fence to cap off the scoring for the afternoon.

Both starting pitchers showed impressive stuff, trading a number of quick innings that resulted in a contest that lasted just over two hours. Jimmy Adkins fought through eight innings of work, striking out seven batters while allowing only four hits.

Ben Marsico succeeded in silencing Salisbury all afternoon, scattering five hits across seven innings of work while striking out three batters to pick up his 11th win of the season.

Salisbury will return to Sea Gull Baseball Stadium on Saturday morning at 8:30 a.m. to take on Penn State University-Abington, which lost its opening game to Rowan University earlier in the day, 18-2. The loser of that game will see its quest for a championship come to a close, while the winner will stick around to take on the loser of Rowan and Washington & Jefferson in another elimination game later that afternoon.
