Gamble named NCAA Defensive Player of the Week

INDIANAPOLIS – Each week, the NCAA announces its Players of the Week for football and Monday the organization honored Salisbury University sophomore linebacker Steven Gamble as the Division III Defensive Player of the Week.

Gamble led Salisbury to 28-17 win against then-No. 8 St. John Fisher College. The Rockville, Md., native posted a career-high 14 tackles to go with 2.5 tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks.

Gamble's biggest play came midway through the fourth quarter of the contest, with the Sea Gulls trailing 17-14. On the first play of the Cardinals' drive, Gamble took down quarterback Tyler Fenti for a 3-yard loss and forced a fumble, which Gamble recovered, setting up the Gulls at the Fisher 6-yard line. Two plays later, Salisbury put the ball in the end zone for the go-ahead score in the top-10 battle.

Gamble and the Gulls will return to action this Saturday, Oct. 13, when they host Hartwick College for an Empire 8 Athletic Conference contest, which will begin at 1 p.m.

University of Wisconsin-Platteville quarterback Bryce Corrigan was named the NCAA Division III Offensive Player of the Week, while Northwestern (Minn.) College's Brian Lecheler was named the Special Teams Player of the Week. For more information on the Division III Players of the Week, click here.
