ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The Empire 8 Athletic Conference announced its weekly award winners on Monday and Salisbury University football players senior Jeremy Keith and sophomore Jerome Johnson claimed the league's Defensive and Special Teams Player of the Week honors, respectively.
Keith, who was named a Beyond Sports Network Player of the Week earlier in the day, recorded four sacks and five tackles for loss in a 28-10 win against North Carolina Wesleyan College on Saturday. Keith's four sacks cost the Battling Bishops 31 yards, including an 11-yard sack on the game's final play. With more than two sacks per game, Keith ranks sixth in Division III football in that category and eighth in tackles for loss (three per game).
Johnson was key in Salisbury's field position throughout the game, returning four kicks on the day. Johnson returned three punts for a 23-yard average, including a long of 35 yards. He also fielded one kickoff, taking it back 47 yards. Offensively, Johnson scored two touchdowns on the ground, rushing for 29 yards on five carries and catching two passes for 42 total yards.
Keith, Johnson and the Sea Gulls will be off this week before kicking off Empire 8 action on Oct. 5, when they travel to Utica College. That game is scheduled to begin at 12 p.m.
