ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The Empire 8 Athletic Conference released its weekly awards on Monday and Salisbury University senior safety Greg Stanton was named the league's Defensive Player of the Week.
Stanton led the Salisbury defense, which allowed Frostburg State University just 154 passing yards in the Sea Gulls' 70-14 Regents Cup win.
The Damascus, Md., native certainly did his part individually, as Stanton ended a Bobcat drive in the first quarter that appeared to be heading for the end zone and a score that would make it 14-0 Frostburg. Stanton picked off Teron Tyre's pass at the Salisbury 7-yard line and went 93 yards the other way, picking up blockers down the left sideline, for a touchdown to tie the game.
Stanton was not done, notching another pick in the first half, and breaking up another pass, while registering five tackles, two solo.
Stanton and the Sea Gulls return to action this Saturday in their season-ending ECAC South Atlantic Bowl at Muhlenberg College. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
