Sea Gulls drop 3-1 decision to No. 4 TCNJ

SALISBURY, Md. – The No. 6 Salisbury University field hockey team hosted No. 4 The College of New Jersey in a top-10 battle on Saturday at Sea Gull Stadium and the Lions came away with a 3-1 victory.

Salisbury (6-2) was able to get the scoring started, by the benefit of a penalty corner in the sixth minute of the game. Kate Melvin inserted and the ball ended up on the stick of Camryn Dennis on the left wing. She ripped a shot to the front of the goal, which seemed destined to be kicked away by TCNJ goalkeeper Maddie Beaumont.

The shot was stopped by Tara Daddio, who turned and slipped a shot under Beaumont and it was tipped home by Emily Lemanski for her for the 1-0 lead and Lemanski's fifth goal of the year.

The lead was short lived as the Lions (5-1) came down and found their own tally less than five minutes later. Kayla Peterson scored the first of her three goals on the day, firing a try from the top of the circle, which deflected off a Salisbury defender and into the cage.

Peterson followed with goals in the 27th and 32nd minutes to give TCNJ a 3-1 halftime edge.

The Sea Gulls increased the offensive pressue in the second half, but were unable to capitalize and get a try past Beaumont.

Salisbury attempted 10 shots in the second half, getting three on target, but Beaumont turned them all away. The home team had five penalty corners in the first eight minutes of the second half and tried four shots.

The Sea Gulls are back in action next Saturday, September 29 when they will travel to Gwynedd Mercy University for a contest scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
