DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Salisbury University men's basketball team started its holiday trip to the Land of Magic Classic with an 87-57 win over Fairleigh Dickinson University–Florham, Saturday afternoon at the ICI Center on the campus of Embry-Riddle University.
Freshman Charles Porter had 18 points to lead the Sea Gull attack, coming off the bench. Porter was 4-of-9 from the floor and 10-for-12 from the free-throw line.
Salisbury (3-4) shot the ball well throughout the contest, hitting on 53.8 percent of its shots from the floor for the game. The Sea Gulls pulled away in the second half by hitting 60 percent of their attempts, with FDU-Florham (5-5) hitting on less than 37 percent in the second half and 34.5 percent for the contest.
The Sea Gulls got off to a thunderous start, with freshman Gordon Jeter putting home a dunk on Salisbury's first possession, just 17 seconds into the contest. Jeter set the tone for the contest, with the Sea Gulls taking a 39-24 lead at the half.
Senior Tim Harwood finished with 12 points, going 4-of-7 from the floor and a perfect 5-for-5 from the free-throw line.
Head Coach Josh Merkel got production up and down his rotation, with 12 players getting on the scoreboard and 11 of those players getting multiple baskets. Senior Brandyn Wilkerson scored 12 points, with sophomores Ryan Miller and Luke Ruland adding eight points each.
Salisbury outrebounded the Devils 44-24 in the contest. Harwood had a team-high eight rebounds, with Jeter and Porter each pulling down six boards.
Salisbury is back in action tomorrow in the Land of Magic Classic, taking on Carnegie Mellon University. That contest is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
