Milburn's career-high 27 points leads Sea Gulls to 81-71 win over No. 12 Mary Washington

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The Salisbury University men's basketball team pushed its winning streak to five with an 81-71 win over No. 12 University of Mary Washington, Saturday afternoon at the Anderson Center. During that stretch, the Sea Gulls have picked up four wins against teams that were sitting above them in the Capital Athletic Conference standings at the time of the matchup.

Senior Dominic Milburn set a new career high with a game-high 27 points to lead the Sea Gull attack. The Silver Spring, Md., native was 9-for-19 from the floor, including 5-of-11 from three-point range. This is the eighth-consecutive contest Milburn has had a double-digit scoring effort and is averaging 16.5 points per game over that span.

Salisbury (11-10, 6-6 CAC) started the contest on a 6-0 run with three-pointers by seniors Brandyn Wilkerson and Milburn.

Two players controlled the first portion of the first half; with 11:11 remaining before halftime and Mary Washington holding a 16-14 lead, Dominic Milburn had nine of Salisbury's points and Dajon Daniel accounted for 14 of the Eagles' points.

Mary Washington (18-3, 11-2 CAC) pushed the lead to double digits, 24-14, with 7:37 remaining in the first half with a Daniel layup for the Eagles that prompted Salisbury Head Coach Josh Merkel to call a timeout. The message from the bench resonated with the Sea Gulls, who went on a 15-3 run over the next 5:32, capped by Wilkerson's second three-pointer of the contest to regain the lead.

Two more lead changes followed, and the teams were tied 32-32 going into the halftime break. Daniel led the Eagles with 16 points in the first half and Milburn had 13 for Salisbury.

Salisbury started the second half strong, taking a 49-41 lead with 13:54 remaining after a layup by sophomore Kyle Savercool for the Sea Gulls' largest lead to that point. After baskets by each team and a three by senior Tim Harwood, the Sea Gulls regained their eight-point lead, 54-46, with 9:57 left in the contest.

Salisbury pushed its lead to double digits for the first time in the game when Wilkerson hit a three from the right wing for a 58-46 SU lead with 7:28 remaining. Mary Washington would go on a 7-0 run over the next 2:05 to get within five; it would be the closest the Eagles would get the rest of the way.

The Sea Gulls would answer back, with threes by Milburn and Harwood to push the lead back to double digits; each three was the third by both players in the second half. Salisbury would maintain its lead, ending Mary Washington's seven-game winning streak and giving the Eagles their first home loss on the year.

Harwood netted 19 points in the contest, with 16 of those coming in the second half as Salisbury pulled away for the victory. Wilkerson chipped in 11 points, while freshman Gordon Jeter registered a double-double with 11 points and a game and career-high 16 rebounds.

Daniel led the Eagles with 24 points, while Dylan Farinet chipped in 14 points.

Salisbury returns home for a midweek clash against Route 13 and CAC rival No. 6 Wesley College. That contest is scheduled for Wednesday, Feb. 12 with a 7:30 p.m. tipoff.
