Sea Gulls down Bobcats on Senior Day

SALISBURY, Md. – The Salisbury University men's basketball team tied a program-best 12 wins in Capital Athletic Conference play with Saturday's 72-54 victory over Frostburg State University at Maggs Physical Activities Center.

Before the game, the Sea Gulls celebrated the careers of seniors Conor Strickland and Nick Sparacino for Senior Day.

Sophomore Gordon Jeter hit a layup on the right side of the post for a 2-0 lead on SU's first possession. The Gulls scored on their first three possessions, as sophomore Justin Witmer drained a three-pointer from the right wing on the second and Jeter followed with a baseline jumper on the right side for a 7-2 lead.

Jeter added another layup, and Sparacino hit a floater while driving down the right side, before hitting two free throws to cap an opening 13-2 stretch for the Sea Gulls.

The Bobcats answered with a 15-5 run to cut the lead to only one, 18-17, but Jeter continued his big half and halted the Frostburg surge with two foul shots and another layup to increase the lead to 23-17.

Freshman Jordan Brooks drove down the middle for an up-and-under layup with contact, before hitting the free throw, and junior Wyatt Smith pushed the advantage back to double digits with a layup on the left side after gathering the offensive rebound, 28-17.

SU continued to hold its lead in the final five minutes, with Frostburg only getting as close as six with 51 seconds left, but Smith hit a three from the top of the key to give the Sea Gulls a 34-25 lead at halftime.

At the break, Salisbury was shooting 48 percent from the floor, and Jeter was leading the team with 11 points.

Jeter opened the second half with SU's first three points, hitting a layup 46 seconds in, before hitting a foul shot for a 37-25 lead.

The Bobcats got the score back down to within eight, 39-31, but SU answered with back-to-back threes, with Strickland hitting with the left wing and junior Rocky Harris following from the right wing.

The long-distance shots began an 18-5 run, as the Gulls built a 21-point lead. Harris added another jumper from the foul line, before Sparacino drilled a three from the left wing and Smith hit two-straight hook shots from the right block to cap the stretch.

Frostburg answered with a 10-1 run to cut SU's lead to 12 with 5:36 remaining, but that is the closest that the Bobcats would get, as SU used an 11-2 run to rebuild the 21-point advantage.

Junior Jacoy Gillum threw down a two-handed dunk in transition and added a three-point play with a layup and the foul shot to power the run for a 69-48 lead, before going on for the win.

Jeter and Smith led the way with 16 points, each, while Sparacino chipped in a career-high nine. Jeter also tallied a team-high seven rebounds, while Strickland dished out a career-high seven assists.

The Sea Gulls travel to Marymount (Va.) University for their next game on Wednesday, February 18, with the opening tip set for 8 p.m.
